For what it is worth, after I had established that ours was no longer smoking from any part of the engine (bad turbo in our case), the oil soaked muffler and cat eventually cleared themselves....

Honestly, get an M3. E9x M3s are getting down into the low 20s for track car suitable donors, have 400hp, and you can relatively easily walk away from that AND find another one. And I bet it'll be...

I have a mix of CDI and Precision torque wrenches. (CDI for precise work, Precision for the big half inch stuff.)

My guess is that I must have run into a clearance issue with the exhaust manifold,...

After discussing it with a machinist friend, we are going to make a bolt in drill guide. So hopefully it'll either drill out freely (with left handed bits), or drill out in a manner that allows a...

Got the valve cover off with a little ingenuity.

Answer: Broken bolt.

Anyone have thoughts on extracting the remainder from the head? This is not exactly an accessible spot.

Can't get the lower valve cover off without pulling the manifold. However, I have been able to establish that either the bolt broke, or backed out on the rocker arm. So, when bill said he...

My pet theory was that the exhaust valve could be closing early leaving enough pressure to blow back into the manifold when the intake valve opened. But I started on the intake because all I had to...

Welp. Not the intake lifter. (It looked fine when I removed it.) Likewise, there were no obvious flaws with the intake valve spring. Replaced and no change.

Ah yeah, that. I've gotten so used to listening to it that I had to hear it again.

At this point, the smart thing to do is probably order a couple lifters to replace while I'm in there. They are...

As far as I can tell, all of the various loud clacking noises are backfiring. With the intercooler off, I can feel the air pulses at the throttle body.

I'm pretty sure that the constant whirring...

It sounds even worse in person.

However, the stethoscope clearly locates it in the manifold vs the head or block. The backfiring pretty clearly seems to be a symptom, rather than the problem.

My general experience has been that it takes a fairly massive intake leak in order to cause backfiring. A not visibly cracked runner, or imperfect seal would not be enough to do it. Furthermore, I...

I've checked for leaks on the manifold runner and base. There is nothing obvious. And for it to backfire on every opportunity, there would need to be a monster leak.

Motor is stock.
