I put a speedo from an 87 in my 84 with no problems. I forget what the exact numbers were but the 87 speedo had a higher top speed than the 84 speedo but I just did a direct swap and it worked...

I've read that when using the Kempf tool on 32V engines it should be tightened to the tight side of the window, so if everything gets fixed and you still get the TB warning this might be the cause.
