I have removed mine without taking the distributor out. I did all the gaskets with the engine still in the car as described in RicardoD's excellent post. Didn't need to loosen the distributor either....

I would suggest searching the 964 forum for ZDDP. There has been lots of debate about the reduction of zinc in oils and the damage it can cause to cams etc.

I think it is because the thermostat is 'free floating' and therefore the position of the pipes and hoses govern the position of it. I did consider trying to adjust the position but thought it not...

My money would be on this rather than a bent shaft. Problem is that if the bearing was pressed on out of square the shaft may be damaged anyway.
