I'd say the best overall value for what you get for the money is the 996 NA. A 911 with +/- 300HP in good shape in the $20K ballpark is a good value in my opinion. Some people may not like it...

Funny you mention your TDI history. Exact same story here. Had a 2013 Passat w/DSG. Really great car for what I needed it for (lots of driving)... Sold it back...

Nice, you'll like it. A bit late but another vote for the Bosch from Pep Boys. Just don't allow the AGM batteries to reach a discharged state. They're not as forgiving from a resuscitation...
