It is possible to run a new wire up the A pillar but personally I would try to repair the system as it was designed. See if you can find the open (where the wire is burnt through or bad connection)...

With a new battery the car should start regardless of the condition of the alternator. Check the voltage of the battery, it should be above 12.4v (that is 80% charged).
