DE insurance update
I just had a converstion the other day with a fellow who enjoyed tracking his Carrera 4S and was convinced that he was covered on non-timed, non-race events like DE days under his regular insurance. I have heard this periodically as well as the opposing point of view. I called my broker and inquired on a "what if" basis. He contacted Intact" assurance, who is my current insurer, and the answer was a definite NO, since it was on a closed circuit. It didn't matter that it was a non-timed, non competitive event.
I'd consider changing insurers if I can find one where this is covered.
Bob mentioned Randy Jones who I plan to contact. My car is not a high-end or expensive machine, but it would be nice to be covered in case I hit the wall!
Anyone have some rrecent experience?
Cheers, James

In a recent Provinz article, there was a story about a Viper driver (and PCA member) who wrecked his new Viper and, with some effort and arguing, confirmed that non-competitive track events ARE covered by normal insurance. His Viper got paid out as a full loss.

As a new owner of a 2002 C4S this is a big issue for me as well. I intend to attend DE events next year at Mont Tremblant and I would like to see,in writing, that I am covered.
Today I called my broker to tell him that the car is safe in a barn until spring. At the same time I asked him (for the third time) if I will be covered for non competitive track events. (For the third time) he told me yes. I believe he has me insured with Aviva on the 911.
I watched a 997 GT3 get put back together over the past few months at a local body shop. It had an 'incident' at Mont Tremblant and the damage was covered by the owners insurance.

Car insurance in ON is (unfortunately) different from QC. And, while "[after] some effort and arguing" you may be successful in getting paid once, I'd really like to see what your rates will do the following year with *any* insurance company - assuming that they will insure you in the first place.
To put it in the immortal words of my very experienced ex-racer racing coach and HPDE instructor - unless you're prepared to write it off, don't track it.

I use Belair Insurance.
Each year, at renewal, I pose the question:
"I wish to learn how to drive my car SAFELY, in a PROTECTED environment, with NO COMPETITIVE motives.
There is NO TIMING, no AGGRESSIVE behaviour, and we are TAUGHT the necessary skills for enjoying these performance cars AWAY from traffic, in a SAFE ENVIRONMENT, with no distractions.
The days are HIGHLY ORGANIZED, and CAREFULLY MONITORED."
Would I be covered?
The emphatic answer is YES.
BTW, I really lay it on thick! SAFETY, NO COMPETITION...a real 'suck'!

When you lay it on that way, your insurance company is thinking of http://www.caddonline.ca/, not PCA. However, the words your insurance adjustor will be emphasizing the moment you try to make a claim will be RACE TRACK, HELMET, 240 km/h and SIDEWAYS. Yeah, good luck with that one.
Are you just blowing smoke or are you really that naive to think that if you put your Porsche in the guardrail or hit another car around Mosport or Tremblant, your insurance company is going to pick up the tab? Really? By the way, I've got some absolutely amazing deals on real estate in the US!!!

Naive?
Ok, maybe. Apparently claims have been paid.
I know of a whack at LCMT this season that was paid for by insurance.
BIG claim...........................BIG!
Knitting is not an alternative activity.

Old Post But since I just saw this I would like to add Intact Lost on this at Divisional Court.
Someone apparently blew a tire in a 930 at Mosport.
The car was a Write Off.
The owner Filed a Claim. His insurer, Intact Refused to pay.
Claimant took matter to Divisional Court.
Claimant Won.
Intact Refused to pay Again. Took Matter to Superior Court.
Intact Lost Second Time and Superior Court Judge Laid Down the law!!
Judge / Court Ruling Created Precedent - Cars are Covered for DE.
Now u race guys - maybe another story>? I 've seen u drive lol !!!
This can be researched on Canlii - Intact Porsche Divisional Court
Perhaps a Lawyer can step in here and provide updates - i think this all occurred about 2008.

Interesting stuff TJ. I couldn't locate the documentation on this.
I suppose that it's true though, that if you can't afford to write it off, you shouldn't be on the track. Let's hope that we can keep the shiny side up!

In BC we had a situation (Many actually) where the Supreme Court of BC ruled in a certain way against ICBC (regarding the insured could get certain level of rental car, similar to his car and whether ICBC must pay the premium one or two body shops charged over the approved rate. The fought the case many time and always lost and always ignored the ruling on the next claim and denied the additional coverage/cost unless they were sued again and lost again.
