Sending PM?

I just signed up as a new free member. I sent a PM and when I go to the sent box it says zero sent.
Am I not allowed to do that since I have zero posts?

Howwever, when I sent the PM it looks like it went through. When I checked the sent box it's not there.

To follow it doesn't seem like I am now able to send a PM.
