If you are replying on a thread, click on 'post reply' at the bottom, left (rather than using the 'quick reply' field) - you'll see the selection available. Just click on the one you want.

If you are starting a thread, you should see the selection of smilies at the beginning.

Just go to the point in the text where you want it to be, then click on the relevant smilie.

Or, once you know it's code (how it actually appears in 'text' - you'll see that after you click on it), you can just type that.
