Buying an ON car
I may have found a good used car (2016 VW). It's still plated Ontario (person just moved to QC).
Normally I would do an RDPRM search – do you know if that would pick up any liens/security from other provinces, or just Quebec?
Asked a different way, when you buy a used ON car, how do you check to confirm it's free and clear.
Related, do you personally bother with carfax or similar? Car is near new, low miles, and has extended warranty so I am not too worried on that front.
Thanks for your thoughts.

UVIP package in Ontario will tell you if it's free and clear. I always run the Carfax, cheap insurance and could be a tool for further negotiation in addition to PPI findings etc.

Drive over the ON and get a used vehicle package at the Service Ontario (MTO) office. All you need is the VIN and $20. It will have the lien info, previous owners, mileage when it changed hands and Wholesale and Retail value.

You can order online, it's $20 and usually takes about 5 to 7 days to show up in the mail.

you can do a lien search for $8 online and get instant results. It's direct with the government, not a 3rd party service:

It's not needed to plate the car in QC... You get a lien search from Carproof.
1. Get the VIN from the owner, insure the car with your insurance company, bring a paper with your policy info. Ontario requires this to issue a transit
2. Bring PASSPORT and/or BIRTH CERTIFICATE. Ontario will not issue a transit plate without this ID. You need this to prove your legal name! Don't get caught with your pants down on a drivers license only.
Meet the seller at the Service Ontario office. Give the car a quick test drive, and do the transfer. The seller needs to sign the back of the car registration, and you need to fill out the rest (the new owner section). Transit is 20$
3.Drive the car home with the transit. Fix whatever problems the car might have.
4.Get appointment at the SAAQ inspection center. Fail inspection the 1st time.
5. Go back to SAAQ inspection
6. Once you get your inspection papers from the SAAQ Inspection center, bring the paper + completed Ontario registration to the SAAQ office and get plates

I'm in BC, years ago carfax saved me from buying a car that had been rolled back an additional 130,000km!
I was soo glad I used it. The car was plated in Quebec when the numbers got dialled back.
A lot of people make a thread and want carfax for free
Others say it's useless, but I don't agree.
A lot of people say a ppi is worthless, but even a basic level half assed ppi that spots undisclosed accident damage such as misaligned panels or respray, that is going to be well received by the prospective buyer.
I would not use a dealership for a ppi, I would find a good place via RL if not local to me.

Thanks again everyone!
And Greg - totally forgot about the SAAQ inspection. For some reason, I had that done on my 1997 993 that I bought 10 years ago from ON, but completely forgot that step...
The selling owner is new to QC (he just moved). I may ask him to get his car plated here and save some steps, transit, etc...
Cheers
