Not sure am doing 5k Litres a year, but am in the thousands...and yes buy in bulk.
I do have another name brand which I supply for extra price-conscious buyers and have a continual supply to me...but it's Castrol for Porsche/BMW/Benz/etc.
Don't think Mobil offers a 5w40 or the 5w50(which is also a good oil) around here... Liqui Moly is another option but they can get their own PDS done right, so...

Because Castrol is cheaper in bulk than M1 To be honest the price is bulk synthetic oil is very cheap but if you buying 5k liters per year and a supplier offers a competitive product for .75c-1$ cheaper per L you would be switching . Without getting into details about specific pricing but if you can store oil and split it amongst a group of 5-6 people buying in bulk will save you a ton of cash. Fill up a 50 Gallon Drum
Currently the best deal is the Castrol at Costco for 35$ a jug

I've taken apart M96 engines that have had either Castrol or M1 since new and they looked great inside. Oil was changed frequently. Same goes for BMW motors that didn't have 20k drain intervals..

I'm not a big fan of Swepco gear oil, I find the early boxes shift better with cheap dino GL5.
Since it's cheap there's no reason not to change it every couple of years.
I still love Swepco 101 grease, you can use it for everything from wheel bearings to CV's

The problem with BITOG is it's a bunch of **** retentive old men driving Chevy Malbu's or such who circle jerk to Blackstone lab reports. The results I've experienced with Castrol have been decent yeah it might not be the 100% best and fanciest stuff but it's easy to get and lets be honest for 99% of clients it's perfectly fine... The most important part is to just change your oil on time using a quality filter. People running on super extended drain intervals make me laugh.. Oil is so cheap you can replace it every 8-10k

Porsche sells their own brand of oil, at least they do for aircooleds.

I think he's referring to the "cold climate" and Vancouver comment, seeing that Vancouver is one of the warmest places in the whole country.
That would be A40. They don't spec a single oil as that would be far too restrictive considering these car are sold worldwide. Same as they don't spec a single gasoline, window washer, etc. Any A40 oil has passed the specification Porsche sets and meets standard. I think Gregster summed it up nicely. Use an A40 oil and change frequently.

You're OK with Rotella. Frankly, I've not seen a diesel oil that isn't certified for gasoline engines. It's the C_ approval you're looking for. This Shell oil is very popular with the older P cars that run at higher temps such as 924s, 944s and 928s.

I now use Chevron Delo 400 LE 15W40, basically the same as the old Rotella T.
BUT these are both diesel oils that will damage your cats on newer cars, so I wouldn't recommend those oils on a later car.
For later cars stick with an A40 approved oil.
