Buying car in Quebec questions...
I'm looking at a private sale in Quebec. Anyone done this recently that can walk me through the process of getting it here and registering in Ontario? I know about title washing etc. And am doing my due diligence in that regard. Thanks in advance!

Race Car
As far as registering it, it's no different than buying a local car. Take the signed title to the MTO with safety and e-test, pay tax, you're done. Unless it's changed recently - it's been a few years since I brought in a QC car.
But have a PPI done. I've bought 2 QC cars in a row (Mazda 3 and Honda Odyssey) and won't buy another one. Lots of rust and suspension problems. From what I understand, it's due to even more salt use than here in Ontario and poor condition roads. I'm looking for a new daily for my wife and am excluding QC cars.

I also did a salvage Cayman S in the fall, and again, same process, other that I also needed a structural inspection due to salvage title.
You should pay tax only once: If you pay both PST and GST in QC, you will not need to pay GST here and will be able to claim back the PST from QC once you pay PST portion of HST here (it's painless).

Get Travel Permit
If Quebec is like the other provinces, you should only need to get a temporary travel permit in Quebec. You should only need the bill of sale and the endorsed ownership. The travel permit will let you drive to Ontario and register the vehicle here. You should not need a safety check in Quebec and not pay any tax there. You'll need the safety and e-test to register in Ontario, and pay the HST at that point.
I'm doing the same this week, but in Manitoba and coming back to Ontario.
You might check with the Quebec MTO equivalent but that's the way is should go.

Thanks Dano. The seller checked out everything this morning. Have to go to the registration office and transfer the car into my name, pay $8.75 for a 4 day trip permit and may have to pay Qst, but it is refundable once the car is registered in Ontario.
Good luck with your purchase!

Can't get a 10 day permit on an out of province vehicle. Must be registered in Ontario...this changed a couple of years ago. Makes it a pain for US imports too.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
I was able to register mine with just the emissions test and documents I had from the Quebec dealer when I got to Ontario, as car was out of province nothing really needed to match, just a bill of sale and you are away, then I could get temporary sticker while I drove it about to its death from failed thrust bearing.
You only need to pay the federal taxes as far as I remember, then balance/ provincial portion in Ontario. It was fairly painless but I was going through a dealer which probably helped.
