I think I might need a new engine.
Anyone got a suggestion for a Canadian source on 3.4 cable throttle engine.
Just pulled the filter on my ticking 996 and its all sparkly. Oil and filter are supposedly fairly recent. seems to be approx 50% ferrous and 50% non ferrous. all white metal.
Thoughts anyone??

I don't understand how your oil and filter could be "supposedly fairly recent". Don't you know when you last changed your oil? I thought only my wife didn't know that.
Did you just buy this car recently and not have it properly inspected?

I bought it recently with engine work carried out through the supplying garage which included head gaskets and heater core. Oil and filter were changed at the time (according to the invoices I have) so less than 500kms, so yes I don't know exactly when and therefore I have to assume (oil looked clean when I bought the car) and no ticking noises at the time of purchase, that's a new thing.
Anyway back to the question, any ideas on an Engine anyone?

Don't no anyone specific who would have one but you can try the usual suspects for Porsche parts in Ontario - Whale Tail, etc. Could try some shops like EU Autowerks as well. If you get desparate, Flat 6 Innovations or LN Engineering in the US might be able to help too.
Let me know if you put the current one up for sale

that sucks!
I'd call Randy and see what he has kicking around, RND engines, or consider a swap...there's a 4.2 Audi v8 swapped Boxster, like the idea...
Hate to be a bird in the rafters, but if you decide to sell I'd also be potentially interested

Take it back to garage where u bought it or to a qualified independent and have it properly assessed. At this point u don't know exactly what is wrong with it
I believe I saw a 3.4 for sale in the for sale ads if it comes to that. RND also provide a quality rebuild or Flat6 of you want to go the upgrade (and most expensive) route

Thanks Vern, original garage is a no go, I'm waiting to hear back from a local recommended indie, you are right I don't know what's wrong, just assuming the worst, with the great combination of ticking noise and metal in the filter.
I did scroll through the for sale ads, will go back further.

You're probably right but no sense guessing. And the ad I saw was in the 997 section and is in the US. 3.6 for US$10.5k
What happened with the place where you bought it?
My engine is being rebuilt to a 4L if you decide to go the rebuilt route

Bought in Quebec through a Nissan Dealer. No recourse with them I'm afraid. Car was cheap, but not cheap enough for a new engine. The 3.6 is supposed to be a difficult swap into the 3.4 as the Variocam Plus is difficult to get working. Its probably a better bet in the long run just pay the $$$$$$$$$$'s for a rebuild or RND Engine. At least that way I get rid of all the known issues and I can have some peace of mind.

Invoice includes filter and oil, this assumes it was added of course total was for about $5k including head gaskets etc etc.
wow, only 28 known failure modes, hopefully it gets most of them.
