Fort McMurray fires.. anyone here impacted?
No doubt everyone's been following the news on the wild fires in AB. Unbelievable to see the devastation. I can't imagine losing all my worldly possessions. These peoples' lives are forever changed... Hopefully no one here has been impacted but I expect everyone here knows at least a person or two that have... a few random photos below.. Unbelievable..

Son in law leaves the Comox Valley for a week in week out rotation, he arrived at the start of the fires on Tuesday and as far I know his site (CNRL) has not stopped production and he's kept working. Other than giving up his room and bed for a displaced person.

Brutal. Some of the videos circling around the web are scary as hell.
My best friend's fire department is being shipped out from BC interior to help this week. I'm nervous as hell about it.

I have spent a lot of time working in and around Fort MacMurray. I was just in Macmurray last week. I am familiar with all the burnt areas being shown in the media. My brother in laws family is from there. It's pretty surprising that nobody was killed. The town will be rebuilt.

I've visited Fort Mac and my wife's brother, sister in law, step mom and her boyfriend are all there. My wife's father also works there but is laid off and living on Vancouver Island.
Her sister in law is pregnant in 2 weeks so it was extra stressful. They were evacuated north and got out safely to Mackay River camp and then to Firebag. The three of them were air lifted out to Calgary first since medical issues were first then families with children. They have a half duplex and a townhouse and both are still standing at this point. Things could change though.
They are safe in Calgary in an apartment now. Our family and strangers are sending her baby supplies since most of it was left behind. She will have everything she needs now. Amazing how people come together to help.
They have been told it will be weeks at best before they will be working again. It sounds like Alberta will be providing financial support to residents.
My heart goes out to all the residents of Fort Mac. Stay strong and rebuild.

Yup. It gets interesting when insurance companies have insurance companies, which they do.

I have a friend (now in ontario) who no longer resides in the city, but has an empty home there. He lost his job when the oil dropped below $60 usa. He's praying that his home catches fire and burns to the ground. His mortgage is worth more than the current value of his home by $120,000 cdn .
Because he's a good friend, I purchased a rosary for him.

It is devastating to be sure but we have to keep in mind its just stuff.. This is rather minor when you think of those killed in the earthquakes in Haiti and the massive human casualties in Japan.
They will rebuild and glad to see a very minimal ( if any ) loss of life .
