My in-laws had all of them and his older Honda Foreman 450 is just about perfect for it. Only one major rule to follow when riding an ATV, don't put your feet down......ever.
I am not sure why dirt bike don't do well. On a dirt nbike I can go over larger fallen logs then an atv can, plus you can shimmy through trees easily where a atv is way to wide.

Good boots with protection really helps, but yah don't use your feet as brakes.

Usually translates to miles and miles of waist deep quagmire. Only place where a bike doesn't have the advantage.

Side by sides (or single seaters like Ace) are a very different experience than a traditional ATV, more rally car like. ATVs require and respond to, body language, sort of like a bike. SxS don't, more like a car, but are generally more comfortable and less physical effort....plus a roll cage provides a bit of warm and fuzzy, just remember to use seatbelts.

If you're thinking of using the snowmobile trail system you'll find that very few, if any, will allow you in this area.
Looks like a blast tho.

So the question of new vs used. Seems like used prices don't have any depreciation hit and looks like government gets to double dip every time there is a private sale.
With not much depreciation and the tax it doesn't seem like much point in buying used when you could get new and have new tires and be sure it wasn't abused.
