Default OT - Lookig for a reputable jeweller in Toronto

Looking to buy my parents each a 1.56ct or similar diamond ring for their 25th anniversary.

Has anyone dealt with Jon Goldberg at Kimberfire or can recommend a reputable jeweller in the GTA?

Thanks

How about the gay guy that always screems in his radio commercials. Can't remember the name but must be popular. Tell him Zookie sent you to get a discount.

If you are to the north of the city check out Finch Centre Jewellers, they have a store in Maple and another beside Colossus 400@7.

I would stick with the big names like Tiffany or Cartier. I've also purchased from Mark Lash but was not pleased with their workmanship. The prices for those 3 places aren't too far off.

From our experience with Spence the ring has to be cleaned annually to keep the warranty in force. The wife's center stone came out after 19 years.

You're probably right. But I don't know anyone I would trust to purchase jewelry from and I wasn't pleased with the workmanship from Mark Lash (although they are also retail). When you compare the workmanship from Joe Blow jeweler, and Tiffany / Cartier, there is actually a noticeable difference (especially while under a microscope). With that being said, the premium may not be worth it to some...while others will begrudgingly pay it. So I stand by Tiffany and Cartier products.

Crawford custom jewlery at Royal York and Bloor, ask for Leanne the owner. I custom designed my wife's eng ring with Leanne down to the last detail and also reviewed CAD drawings to ensure everything was exactly as I wanted.

I purchased her diamond loose wholesale in the U.S. back when $ was at par. She told me without hesitation I paid what she would pay for the diamond by going the route I did.

I used:

http://www.coronajewellery.com/corona/index.asp

All Canadian diamonds. Full documentation. Very professional outfit.

However, they are a wholesaler, so their showroom isn't as customer focused as others. Pretty easy sacrifice to make when you're paying about 60% of retail.

Hollywood Diamond at 2360 Yonge St. He has made numerous custom jewellery pieces for me (well, my wife, mother, etc.) during the past 20 years. Family owned and operated (owner's name is Thatch), no pressure whatsoever, will sit with you for many hours while you're trying to decide on the right stone(s), will give you all the time you want to select the right one(s), encourage you to shop around and look elsewhere, and will build you whatever setting and ring you want from whatever metal you want if you decide to proceed. Nothing shady, all diamonds are girdle laser inscribed (not conflict), and you'll get a proper and legitimate appraisal certificate. One of the nicest and most honest poeope I've ever met, plus his knowledge and workmanship quality is superb.

When one of the smaller accent stones on my wife's engagement ring fell out some 7 years after we had had it made by him (and was lost - as in we no longer had the diamond), without me even asking he said he would find a sutable one to replace it with and get it done. When I came back to pick it up a couple of weeks later and asked what I owe him for the new stone and the work, he said "nothing - it wasn't ever supposed to fall out, so the mistake was mine and I am responsible for the replacement". Can't beat that.

Now, if anyone knows of a Porsche mechanic that would do the same, I am all ears...

Price on diamonds can vary immensely depending on the cut and clarity and colour of the stone. A 1 carat stone can be bought for $2,000 right up to about $15,000 depending on the quality/colour etc. To say a 3/4 carat stone is $1,500 without knowing the quality of the stone is a little risky to say the least.
