Engine Rebuild Recommendation
Hi all,
I'm in the process of getting quotes to have a engine re-built on a 2005 911 Carrera S (3.8L) engine. I will need all cylinders re-sleeved, new pistons, updated IMS & the clutch changed (this is what I think, it could be more or less work). I have been getting quotes from multiple places in the US (9xx motorsports, UFO Motorsports, EBS Racing) and two places in Canada (Mantis, Hunter Motorsports).
From what I am seeing, the prices in the US seems to be around $3000 lower after factoring all shipping, US $ conversions, tax, etc. All of these US places have multiple reviews from satisfied Porsche owners so I have no doubt they will do a good job.
I am interested to know if Mantis or Hunter are just as specialized in rebuilding these engines (installing sleeves, etc) as I have read good reviews regarding other work they have done, but not much on engine rebuilding for 996/997's ? Does anyone have any recommendations?
In addition, are there any other Canadian shops that you can recommend that are good at rebuilding similar pricing to the US?
Thanks

You might be able to save some money by sending out the case to be done yourself, and acquiring all the parts yourself, then going to someone to assemble for you. But that would mean you will have to pull and disassemble yourself...
I'm not 100% sure, but I imagine Hunter and Mantis will be sending it out anyways to have any machine work or plating etc done as I don't think these are done in-house.
As for state-side solutions, LN Engineering is someone you should be checking out, as well as Flat 6 Innovations (Jake Raby). Jake's website is a great resource as well.

No one in Canada specializes in 996/997 engine rebuilds. Though many have done some rebuilds. There are also few places that will be able to resleve the engine blocks. Needs to be send out to the States for that work. LN is the only one I know of and they are back logged and there is a long wait.
The quickest way is to find blocks halves that are good and then just tear down and replace your with the good ones.

Same thing that happens to all these new Porsche engines . Premature cylinder wear, causes scuffing or scrapes from cold starts as different metals expand at different rates or cylinder ovaling from over heating due to poor cooling.

Dropped my engine off and picked it up 3 weeks later
I didn't want Sleeve's so I opted for a Used Half Case and Used Pistons from that Engine that had 16k Miles on it.
also got my Heads Ported and Polished
Your best bet is to Trailer the car to them as they charge $1000 is for RE & RE on the Engine
If I had known that I would have Trailered my car to Chicago as well, but Hunter did the RE & RE for me
M97 will be more than 8k I think

So I just talked to MB motorsports and mentioned you, they seemed to give me a very competitive price, there is a good chance I will go with them to complete the repair based on your review. I am going to get them to put in new liners (they don't have case halfs at the moment for the 3.8)......new pistons, updated IMS, new clutch.......I plan on shipping the whole vehicle to them and then probably driving the car back down after its complete.
A few more questions, was MB easy to deal with over e-mail? The man was a bit hard to understand over the phone as he had a strong accent. Also, do you think they will take photos of the process along the way ?
