That squeegee would have had a healthy dose of windshield washer fluid/methanol on it. Which he pushed into the hot engine bay.
Not to mention the gas he was wiping off .. which sits on top of any water...

Hopefully the publicity Mike and his company gets from this will justify the expense of a new 918

I'm a half-glass-full kinda guy. Gotta look on the bright side (and there was a REALLY bright side judging by those videos)!

It would be a safer design if the fuel intake tube were in the front fender like any of our 911s. This incident certainly would not have happened.
Not sure where the gas tank is on a 918, though.

I know the first thing I'd do after spilling a bit of gas on my new million dollar car is to reach for a gas station squeegee that just cleaned the front bumper of some F-150!!! What an idiot!!

My boss knows that station well. He's says it's a pos and nothing works right. He purposely avoids it.

Given that fact I kind of doubt the squeegee had washer fluid in it. Probably plain dirty water. Lol

I'm sure the lawyers will find a way to either blame Porsche, or the gas station, or the gas co. They are good that way....

My guess would be he wiped the excess fuel off the car and onto the rear exhaust. If he would have grabbed the extinguisher sitting right there it would at least have probably put out the fire. Tunnel vision kicked in and nobody was thinking straight I would suspect.

Given the fact that it's the gas vapor that ignites ...and the whole side of the car was covered in gas. There could've been a cloud of vapor that hovered around the exhaust pipe /side vent and got sucked into the engine bay and the rest is history.

Hopefully they can actually figure it out.

Re flash is expect with a dry chem extinguisher on a flammable liquid as it doesn't remove heat and provides no barrier to the air. As soon as the hot vapour gets O2- flames again.
Don't know why AFFF ( foam) isn't stationed- probably $$

he pushed the gas onto the rear brake caliper which caused the fire. I has been said and seen on video the fire started behind the rear wheels. he also probably continued to fill after the pump stopped at full- apparantly that is illegal in some states. He doesn't need lawyers as the car was insured I am sure. It was his own fault unfortunately.
now the question which may cause the fire to cost him half of everything...was that his wife with him?

Can you imagine the call to the insurance adjuster?
