Driving the famed Nurburg Ring in Canada!! – a firsthand account
So what’s it really like driving the Canadian version of the famed Nurburg Ring, a specially constructed ice road?
Well, I don’t want to over promise and under deliver.
So here’s my version. Take from it what you want.
Having said that ….
May I humbly suggest ………
As awesome as Canada’s great race tracks are,
and as fun as racing or lapping days can be…..
Nothing, I mean absolutely nothing - compares to this form of motoring.
And as great as it is to race around a track with crystal clear blue skies and the whitest of snows – with totally crazy steering angles… that’s not really what it’s about.
And as crazy as it is to throw huge slides in every corner, that’s not it either
The magic.
The real moment of ecstasy - starts just after the sun has set, and the last of the alpenglow has come and gone - and it’s so dark out, you can’t see your feet.
and you are all alone –
with a million stars …………
and a 1,000 kilometres of track to cover before the first rays of sunlight appear.
That’s when the real magic happens.
There are no distractions, no lights, no cars.
No mortgages, no bills, no emails, no telephone calls – nothing.
This is as pure as it gets.
And as crazy as it sounds, everything slows down - while travelling at breakneck speed
Everything slows right down - as your senses go into a totally adrenalin infused overdrive!!!
Every sensory input is heightened to infinity :
Your sense of TOUCH , you can feel every slight imperfection of the ice through the light touch of your steering wheel
Your eyes - so alert –
you SEE the minutest details in that sweet tunnel of light hitting the glistening snow ahead
Your sense of hearing- totally in tune with your engine
you HEAR every small change in rpm
There is no road noise.
All you hear is your engine and a beautiful quiet hiss -
As you throw a 30 foot rooster tail of snow dust around every corner!!!!!!
And the greatest sensory overload of all –
that sweet, sweet sense of motion:
You are at ONE with your car – you can feel every small change in acceleration/ deceleration – the slightest amount of over steer becomes totally magnified.
Around and around you go- braking, shifting, turning, accelerating – only 1,000 corners to go until the sun comes up.
You are in a time warp. The hours seem like minutes.
Driver changes every 2 hours? No way!
Lemans is for wimps!!!
And then the first rays of sunlight appear over the snowy horizon.
It’s over.
You drive back to the hotel – a permanent smile planted on your face and a feeling you probably haven’t experienced for a long long time –
The feeling of the purest contentment possible – not a thought or a care in the world.
Who needs drugs, when you can get the greatest rush of all – just from life itself.
You catch a few hours of sleep while the rest of the world slowly wakes and rushes off - scurrying here and scurrying there.
for what? Just to make another buck?
Please, life is worth more than that.
You head off to the highway, latte in hand – just happy to drive home in a straight line on cruise control.
Your triceps ache – from turning the wheel for 5,000? corners, your clutch knee pains - from 15,000? shifts
You’re totally exhausted…. but ready to do it all over again at a second’s notice.
This is why we drive. This is what it’s all about.
Before it was one horse, now it’s 300.
We are hard wired. We are men.
We were born to ride.

I believe he is talking about the fun and excitement of winter rally car racing cause that's the only thing I can think of that would be more fun than track racing.

Confused here...Nurburgring is undriveable in snow and only 20km of paved bumpy road.
They do have winter trackwalks and a bit of crosscountry skiing now and then

For the record, this is NOT me! No clue who this cat is, but his posts are bizarre. I have nothing to do with any of this and apologize of behalf of sane rally drivers and fans worldwide.

Ah, I see the difference now... Rallyguy vs Rally Guy. I thought the writing style looked different than what I would have expected from you. So somebody was unoriginal enough to take your handle and remove a space. I was fooled RK but I'm glad you straightened it out.
