Nice... Since it's probably a 15+ year old car you didn't get all the extra fees like I did. Bought mine 2-3 months ago and I'm still with the California plates!

I can park anywhere with no tickets. It's great!

Actually its age didn’t save me much. Just $197 because it is exempt from an emission inspection.

I forgot to mention that I need to take my car for a mandatory "safety" inspection before I can register for new plates. Gotta love Quebec!

That's not true. It's 197 bucks because you have to register to the RIV (Register of Imported Vehicules) and pass a Federal inspection (free of charge at all Canadian Tire stores). Only then can you carry out the Provincial inspection. All that if you car has less than 15 years.

However, to pass that Federal inspection, you have to do some mods to the car: daylight running lights, install baby seat hooks, and other useless stuff. For example, daylight running lights on a 964 require 3-4 hrs of labor (rewiring) and a new relay. Trust me, it can get costly.

At least we don't have to safety it every year. I think they have to do so in Ontario...? Anyone?

IIRC, all it takes for DRL's is the relay to be installed in the socket that is already there.

Marc,

I've asked a couple of places and some say it doesn't take anything and others say yes. I've talked to the master porsche tech at the Ottawa dealership and he confirmed that it needed more than the relay (rewiring required). I finially got the fog lights to act as running lights and I passed the inspection without any problems. 30 minutes of work versus 3 hrs.

Not safety but we do have to emission test it every 2yrs.

I don't doubt the info you got and the effort you put in to get yours working but according to DerkBarrington (a Rennlister in NB who who imported his car from FL) and others in the 964 forum, it just takes a relay.

I live in Gatineau (close to Ottawa), but right now I'm working in Québec City.

I pass through Mtl every two weeks.

This sucks. I should have just bought a relay and tried it myself.

Do we need to have the analogue speedometer gauge faceplate changed to KMPH or is it okay to show the digital speedometer set to KMPH when we import a car into Canada?

Searched the whole forum for an answer, but couldn't find any

Thanks!

I imported mine without changing it from MPH... and have had no problems.

At one point, I called Canada Customs about importing. They don't care if it is MPH or KPH or RoW. As long as it is 15 years old. Mine is a typical US car with MPH and tiny KPH. No problem.
