radar detectors
Any body use these in Canada. I have never met anyone with one or who had one. I know these are illegal but it is worth having one. I also heard that the police can detect them.
Any advice?

The Stealthier the better....The smallest the better (will fit in shirt pocket) easy to turn off....be very careful as to what you buy...Big fines

My friend was caught speeding in an IROC camaro some years back and the officer said, so why don't you get a detector?

I know two guys that have been caught with them, both times the cop just confiscated it. I have a Bel Vector LR that I use every time I'm on the highway, if it saves you once, it's paid for itself. The problem is laser, I got caught in a laser trap and it didn't even peep, but I didn't have it in the windshield properly for fear of a cop seeing it there. But, if you go to a pawn shop and buy a crappy old one for as little as possible, use that as your 'sacrifice' for confiscation, then go buy the best one on the market. It'll save you most of the time out of the city because some police radios will set it off, so you'll know there's a cop around. The OPP now has about 100 detector detectors that are supposed to be able to find everything, even though mine says it's undetectable. I heard they only put them in the unmarked cars, so the regular cruisers don't have them. If you see a cop, shut if off and stuff it down your pants, they can't search you personally unless they're arresting you, he can only search the car with reasonable cause. If photo radar comes back, you'll be laughing.

recently, i heard that the companies making the radars detectors, are also the ones making the radar dectector dectectors for polic cruisers(so they are always one step ahead). i would just drive a little less aggressively, and always follow somebody who is speeding. if you want to go fast, i guess take it to the track? or take your chances with a radar detector....i know a guy who had his confiscated, but like scooter said, buy a fake one to hand over, thats what he did...good luck dude.

yeah, one got nailed when the cop passed him in the opposite direction and saw it in the windshield, the other was caught when the cop shot radar at him and he kep hitting his brakes. He had it hard wired into a power line from his door and the cop said the fine is doubled if it's installed so he ripped it out and said it's not. the cop just took it.

I got burned bad by having a detector a couple of years ago. They detected it when I went by at about 200kph. They set up an ambush and nailed me. They confiscated the detector, charged me $350 and gave me a speeding ticket for the radar that they lied about catching me with. The fact was that when they clocked me, I was traveling about 110 kph and they clocked another car at 138 kph and applied his speed to me as an extra bonus. I couldn't fight it because the other "good ol boys" (cops) that were present all agreed to be a witness to my speeding. Now I don't use one and instead, I choose my speeding very carefully. My insurance has almost doubled as well so all in all, the exercise has cost me about $3000 over 2 years.
