Non synthetic motor oil
97 993 C4S
I'm reaching out for a little peace of mind , over the winter had some work done at my local indie , complete tune-up , clutch , wires etc...also a couple of seals one of which was the front crankshaft seal , soon realized that it was leaking and the indie at their expense changed the seal and also did an oil change and added a mineral non synthetic oil , their reasoning being a non synthetic oil is beneficial to seals & gaskets & often stops small oil leaks , as I've owned the car since new and have only used synthetic oil should I be concern. Many many oil threads and I've read them all & as far as I can see no one uses anything but synthetic...I've just purchased mobil1 Vtwin 20w50 but wondering if I'm overreacting..here is the oil installed.[img]cidF816B1D-145D-4D5E-9119-E7A3FB16AED8

I had reached out to Steve Weiner and this is what he had to say
I'm unfamiliar with that oil so I cannot tell you if it has the right additive package for these air-cooled cars or not.
Proper oils are API SG/SH rated and contain 1200ppi of both Zn & P to protect critical parts.

Use the oil Porsche speced. If it was supposed to be synthetic, then stick with it. Your mechanic is correct, regular oil is less prone to leak when the seals are old but it also not going to protect the engine internals like a synthetic one would. I would trade small leak for engine longevity any day.
It doesn't leak oil, it sweats horsepower!

Danny,
I've used Mobil1 15w50 synthetic in my 89 911 since i've owned it ,as well as after i swapped a 3.6 engine like yours
in my car ... now being air cooled engines the real difference between synthetic and mineral is the breaking point of the oil, which i
believe is higher with a synthetic. Our cars also like ZZDP which Mobil contains a lot of, but everybody has their opinion on engine oils, i just
know what works for me !
Mind you , i use Amsoil 15w50 Dominator in the race car ...
You can read all the oil threads on Pelican until you get dizzy !!!
