Default Holy repair bill Batman

My shifter and trans have never played well together and I have had a few shifters in there and even a short shifter installed on the trans. Never once did they work well. almost 2 inches of side to side play while in gear. took it to Mantis and they tightened it up and it felt 1000% better after just a few min but the shift rod that runs from the front to the back is worn out and the shift slop will be back. I took it home till they can get me a new rod. On the way home I over heated pretty bad. took it back in for the shifter and told them about the over heat so they could check it out. turns out my thermostat went bad and my oil to water cooler seal has seen better days and now also that my shiftier is working better my clutch is more noticeable lol it never ends. anyways this is like a 4k week for me.

I also just picked up a header from Lindsey racing so hopefully once that comes in and I redo my full exhaust the car can be worry free for a few weeks this summer and I can enjoy it for a change I also picked up a chip but its NA so I dont have high hopes.

On a brighter side I think after all this work my car might be worth a little more so I will need to get an appraisal so I can get my insurance sorted out.

Wow ... find someone nearby who knows 944's , as there's no way it should cost you 4K in repair bills !
Basically all you need is a new thermostat, oil cooler seal and somebody with the tool to line up the OPRV as well a a good set of circlip pliers for the thermostat !

Do yourself and your shifter a favor and order all the shifter/tranny bits from Kyle at only944.com. you won't believe the difference ...
Now the clutch ... well , that's another story !

I'm not mad at the prices, they just hurt a little lol. and yea I have all the bits from only944

To be honest I always feel better after leaving a shop when I feel they know what they are doing. I'm pretty sure these guys know 944's

Try zoro tech in Stoney Creek or Auguste is St. Catherine’s.

The sloppy shifter comes from disintegration of the front ball cap bushing and the linkage at the back just before the transaxle. These parts are cheap but a PIA to get at. I just did mine on my 928, damn bloody knuckles.

Also maybe ping Roger who heads up the PCA UCR 944 group, I’m sure he can provide assistance from that community.

There is enough information on Rennlist to get this done yourself. Give it a shot, it is easier than you think and save the money for something that you really can’t fix but don’t blow it on stuff like headers and a chip. You will not feel any seat of the pants difference. Fix the broken stuff first before doing any “mods”.

the header is to fix a cracked stock header. the chip is for fun. not expecting anything.

they just i guess finished the clutch and took it for a test drive but it seems like something happend to the trans on the test drive. not sure whos fault this is or whats going to happen but I do not have an bottomless bank account. I guess i'll find out tomorrow whats going on.

Don't want to rain on your parade, but sounds like you need to GET OUT OF THAT CAR before you sink one more dime into it--take your lumps $$$$ and chalk it up.

Or as Imo said, keep it as a project and learn how to do the stuff yourself, bit by bit as funds allow.

well all the work is done now so it's not going anywhere. I guess at the least I am helping to keep 1 more car out of the crusher. final bill is looking like $5600. unless there are some more new discovery's today. but I'm tapped for now so anything else will have to wait.

$8,500 - car
$4,000 - last summer refreshing things including suspension and a few interior pieces and a bunch of seals pretty much everything only944 sells
$6,700 - ( so far ) this week fixing every damn last thing
$19,200 - Ahhhhh!

so far I've owned it for ALMOST one year and maybe 5,000 km

Dude, you are doing EVERYTHING wrong. The 944 is a simple car to work on, take it home and do all the work yourself. Don’t worry, you will learn how to do it. I will be shocked if the shop claims anything other than the transmission failure isn’t their fault. It will be a “coincidental” failure that happened just at the same time as they were test driving it.

You spent $20K to have a $5000 car. From now on, do your own work. Even let’s say it costs the same, at least you will get the knowledge and all the tools to keep after the work is done.
