Default OT: New driver's insurance - 16 year old...

Anyone have good resources as to the best way to insure a new driver?

Our agent (Desjardin - was State Farm) said typically...

Add as occasional driver to 1st vehicle $40, add to 2nd vehicles $70

If she were to get insured on an older vehicle as a daily driver it would be about $200 /month to start...

Apparently, your driving insurance record doesn't start until you become a principal driver... so if we paid for a few years of her as an occasional driver, it would not count as being insured when she goes out on her own....

I'm trying to figure out if it's better to start her off as a prinicipal driver early....

I don't believe that to be true. You want their name on the policy to build that insurance time. When they get their own car they will be asked if they have had auto insurance in the past. They can say they did on parents policy.

So we have had the same experience, obviously excluded her from the Porsche but to add to the wifes BMW 335 was $16 (a year!!) as an occasional driver, she could then drive my car as well. BelAir told us that you want to name them on the policy as it does aggregate years of experience in their eyes and so does help reduce the cost when they become a primary driver.

We ended up with the 4th car so she's now a primary and around $200 a month is the right number. Just be glad you don't have boys as I've heard their premiums as a primary are horrific!!

BTW we moved to Desjardin last year as they were cheaper than BelAir direct who we felt were creeping price increases in and then (the final straw) tried to jam the deductible on the Porsche up to $4000 at the same premium!!

just for clarification.... those numbers were additional cost per month....

My son is 13, and can't wait the 30 months until he turns 16.... He's already eyeing up my new DD - 2015 Golf TDI 6MT

How are insurance providers going to treat (X) gender neutral? rates?
I have 12 days to decide for my kid James/Jamie? turns 16. I doomed either way.
I do trust that my broker will steer me in the correct direction.

Screw that! Give him the biggest $hitbox that you can find.

Neat trick, although I don't think pressure will get anywhere with it?

The hope would be that you would want them to even out the insurance rates for males and females, so that they would cost the same, instead of the man paying $4500 for the cruze, and the woman $3400 for the same car -- they would each pay $3950/yr....

Instead of evening out the insurance rates, I could see them just bumping up the woman's rates to meet the man's rate, and they each end up paying close to $4500..... More money for the insurance company....

Insurance for my kids was $0 when the received their G1 and continued to be $0 with their G2. Not until they graduated to a G license did I start paying premiums

yes I have Bel air and have the same experience as above .. had him as occasional for 3 years and they definitely counted it, charged about 500 a year which was not bad at all . ... after he graduated school and got a job I gifted him the car and he pays 1900 a year. For a 21 year old male on his own Audi, I thought that was a really good rate.
