Three Wheelin'
The Jap cars are easy to lift .... I have not heard of any German cars where hijacking by way of the the FOB was possible.

someone I know had a lexus in the driveway, the thieves were able to start the car and move it to the end of the driveway and no longer were able to steal the car...so they smashed/trashed it. Anybody heard of this? Oh and people just put the keys in a coffee can now.

All this inconvenience (messing with Faraday cages, etc.) and fear, due to the key-less technologies sold as a convenience, and not optional...
A simple solution for manufactures: provide an on/off switch on the key fob! As they are, the fob is constantly on, and broadcasting a signal that can be then intercepted by a thief/hacker. After I exit or enter my car, why can't I just press the lock button, and turn the fob off before I walk away, and on when I'm back at the car and it's safe to use.
Instead, consumers scramble to find a way to recapture the security that this technology compromises. Creating a whole new market for Faraday pouches, boxes, etc. I wonder if the manufacturers have a piece of that action?

Halton Police came to our house 2 weeks ago to inform us that a ring was targeting Lexus and Range Rovers in our neighborhood. Used DMV records to locate us. They use signal boosters and a device they put in the diagnostic port to steal the cars. They said to get a club or a device that blocks the port that is sold online. Garage is good too...but they pried my niegbour’s garage door open and stole his Lexus...

And so why not an on/off switch? Then you have the functionality, if you want it, or just turn it off when you don't. And everyone that owns the car over its lifetime can optionally use the proximity locking system, or not...
