You can run your Stan Smith tennis shoes all year if you like.
I like winter boots. Way less soakers.
Need or want?
O/P - I seem to remember having three names for the same factory produced winter tire. Viking $9o, Semprit $11o, Dunlop $13o.?
A winter tire discount? 5% on $2000 insurance is 100 bucks. Four years is 400 bucks. That certainly puts a dent in the price of the winter tires.
Plus they are a wear item, so you're burning out All seasons, or Winter tires?

I couldn't disagree more. The dedicated snow tire stopped 40 feet sooner than a UHP all season tire from 30 mph. Put another way, the UHP all season required 150% the distance of the dedicated winter tire when travelling at city speeds.
The issue is if the winter tire actually fits the conditions you see where you live. In the GTA there are very few days of ice and snow covered roads. Most of us might be better off with good all season tires. The question is if it is more important to equip your car for the worst conditions, and accept it won't be as good in most conditions, or the other way around.

All good points.
my insurance is about $1000/yr on my Jetta, so it's only a $50 savings. It's also only worth about $3000 tops regardless of rubber on it. That being said, I have next to no depreciation on it when I rack up the km's for work or chauffering the kids around SW Ontario. Plus, it still puts a smile on my face when I get into the low end torque (Stage 1.5 Tune) and 5.5L/100km economy.
re: wear item. This spring/summer/fall, I'm trying to kill off my present set of Sailun WInter tires... I figured the 10-12,000km of driving I'll put on them before the November hits is worth more than the $50 I might get for them on kijiji I will have a new set of winter tires for this winter..... I have a set of good newish all seasons in the shed for the swap next spring.
