Default Transmission and Motor Mounts

Hi Rennlist Canada folks,

I've got a 986 Boxster S with 136K KM on the clock. Looking to do some preventative maintenance before the winter season and had the transmission and motor mounts on the list.

I got a quote from a local independent in Toronto - $1000 and change for parts and labour. Has anyone done this before elsewhere? Looking to see if I should get a second opinion or not. The Pelican Parts article mention that its a few hours labour, but I did not expect it to shoot up to a grand. I would do this myself, but there is limited space and a fascist condo strata. Any input appreciated. Thanks!

Why do you think this needs to be done?

That's a good question, but the honest answer is I don't know, and "just because."

I recently replaced the shocks and figured maybe time to replace the transmission and motor mounts to revitalize the overall feel when rowing through the gears. I expected that the parts were cheap'ish, but did not expect all things said and done to shoot up to $1000.

I installed motor mount in my 996 in about 1/2 hour with a couple of hand tools and a floor jack, trans mount is a more involved job it is a press fit unit into the transmission case requiring lowering the trans for access and a specific bushing puller, but this may not apply to the 986. Trans was done around 110k and the inner core was torn separate from the outer section, motor mounts around 80k they had about 1/2 of sag in them, noticeable improvement with both MM being RSS and TM replaced with OEM. If your planning on clutch work at some point that would save on the trans mount, you could try the inserts until then. I have used Powerflex yellow with good results, tried the black but way to high on the noise vibration scale for anything more than a beer run, was like driving the Van Dieman all over again, If anyone wants to try black inserts you can have these.

I'll have to go through the previous service records, but the clutch was done by the previous owner at 110K KM. I do not believe any mounts were changed. Add insult to injury, the IMS was not done, but it wasn't a thing back then.

For mounts, I think I would prefer OEM, or at least the Rennline mounts.

I did the motor mount on my 01 986s back in 2009 shortly after I purchased the car. I was having problems shifting into 3rd and someone on the interwebs said that a worn engine mount may be partly to blame for that.

I installed a pedros enthusiast mount using jackstands and some ramps in a short evening in the garage by myself ...

The car had 70K km at the time. Now it's at 140K km.

I have not done the tranny mounts yet, but when I did look into it, they were a bit pricey.

I just filled my transmission mounts with window weld. Easy $10 fix.

Don't think I've heard transmission mounts wear out on a 986.

The trans mounts aren't too bad to replace. The Front Motor mount is a bit of a pain

bcrdukes,

just for clarification, the 986 boxster tranny mounts are similiar to the 993 motor mounts....

did you get them replaced? notice any difference?
