Default Importing wheels from France

Can anyone help me understand the duties and taxes when importing a set of Tramont Cup wheels from France. The price quoted was $2,322 Euro excluding VAT. I'm trying to figure out what the landed cost would be without shipping (that is $650 euro). Thanks for any help that someone might be able to provide!

You need to find out duty. Call a customs broker.

Looks like $826.72 CND based upon $4179. CND value. (Not sure if they add shipping as part of value.)
Apply for a VAT refund. Hopefully they included the forms for you.

Thanks. That calculator only covers duty and HST. I called CBSA and they "think" I have to pay the 20% VAT also. If so, that deal is dead!

Yeah, the statement on the site says you have to include the VAT charge and then do the duty calculation. I also don’t believe you can get 100% of the VAT refunded - perhaps only 80%?. Certainly the refund will have a bank charge when you get it after submitting a paper application and months of waiting.

Obviously the new CETA agreement won’t help you here as the agreement has phase out periods of up to seven years depending on the product for tariffs and duties. It’s clear that rims (auto parts) are on the high end of duties where as a full vehicle is on the lower scale. (I think the range is from 4.5% to 22% depending on item).

I've brought in quite a few parts from the US over the years believe that the same duties apply regardless of where stuff is coming in from. For auto parts made in North America, you'll pay HST. For anything made outside of North America, it's HST + 20% duty. This is all based on my memory, you might want to check with CSBA for the exact number, but I'm 99% sure that those are the numbers.

No, imports from most of the eu have 6 % duty plus HST. The VAT tax is collected by the country of origin, not Canada. It isn’t duty.

But the foreign VAT must be applied to the sellers price and *then* the duties paid on that value. The BS Canadian Government (and Ontario) *theroy* is that by paying the foreign tax on an item - you have added value to said item so the duty paid shall always be on ‘total’ value. It’s the same BS reason why we pay taxes upon taxes when we buy gas at the pump. We have a federal excise tax hidden in the cost of gas that we then have PST piling on top of.

I pay a tax for rain falling on my roof in Mississauga - true story of Government corruption as I already pay property taxes. (Don’t get me started...)

This is absolutely true ... I got my exhaust system from the US. I got it for 800 bucks USD used, plus 200 to ship it from California to Buffalo. When I brought it over They considered the value now 800 plus the 200 to ship it so its "landed value" was 1000 USD which I had to pay tax on.
Anything to add more tax.

I stand corrected. It looks like parts manufactured outside of North America are subject to HST + 8% duty. Please see the link below:
