2000 996 - Engine rebuild(new engine block probably needed)
Does anyone have any experience with having an engine rebuilt with a new block. My engine cracked while at the track last fall and is most likely in need of a new block. Mark Motors Porsche of Ottawa provided an estimate (without looking at it), and it looks like it will cost around $18K for parts & labour... This assumes I need a new engine short block and that my core in not reusable. It also comes with a 2 year parts & labour warranty. Does anyone recommend Mark Motors or any other shops around Ottawa or nearby(Montreal, Toronto) for this type of work?
Thanks. |
No info re Mark motor but $18k for a rebuild with 2 years warranty sounds like an excellent deal

Not much around here for complete rebuilding options all the best places are in Florida or Georgia .. Contact Whaletale in Waterloo for used or rebuilding options if you want to deal in Canada or Andre Gaudet Autosport but he deals in older stuff.. 18K without looking at it seems risky.. it could add up to more which already at 18K is getting close to beyond economical repair on a 2000 996 as the value of the car complete is about 20-25k
If you look around you can find a used 3.4L for 7500-10k CDN |
Check with Alpine Autowerks in Calgary too, if you want a second opinion. Marc was very helpful in a recent phone call I had with them and they have lots of experience with rebuilding these engine.

You might want to check with Mark Henry, his shop is near Mosport. I discovered his work when I was checking out a 914 that needed an awesome engine. He also does watercooleds.

https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...gine-porn.html But Porsche now offers the Short Block for $8k plus it’s the block with pistons and cylinders. No heads, basically using all the old bits from the old engine, all new gaskets bolt it all up and hit the streets Plus is $4k Core which is Refunded when you give your ShortBlock back as long as its Intact Goodluck :) |

Is this the engine you are upgrading? |
What part of the block cracked? Maybe it's fixable.

Isn't the 996 case half's that envelope a crank box ? Can you not just get a case half that you need ?
|
I'd jump on that OEM short block and go from there
