OT: well water

Get it tested before you put in an offer, and a few times a year after that...
Test it more often if there is a dairy or pork farm up hill from you....

Our cottage is on a dug well with a UV light and 3 stages of filter/carbon We test the well a couple of times a year, on one occasion had a bit of contamination in the well but post filter was clear. A mixture of bleach and water cleared it out.
If you get a home inspection have both the source and post filtration water tested.

other then forest hill, id say most if not close to a all estate homes in ontario are all on their own individual private septic water systems (with water filtering units). like others have stated do water testing occasinoally.
We have been looking at new homes in the Puslinch area and most of the estate type homes have ‘drilled wells”. I’ve done some research on-line, but can’t find anything clear on how you ensure that the water is safe to drink day to day. Does anyone know if there are purification systems that monitor water quality?

Halton Region pulls water from Lake Ontario through a couple of pipes that extend a few miles offshore and 200 ft deep. The water passes through several filters and is UV treated as well.

That's why I chose to get all my water from imported beer. LOL

Imagine all the brake pad asbestos and other pollution from over the years just from the 400 series hwys being washed into the lake. I think the beer diet is a good idea.

Until you've lived in the Eastern Block or in the developing parts of the world, you have no idea what dirty water actually is. You guys are all freaking out about Lake Ontario being dirty? It isn't.

I am in East St. Paul MB (no where near you) but we have well water. No issues in our area but I do use a softener and a reverse osmosis system (for drinking only). The water is safe but I use the RO system for taste as there is a very slight sulphur smell.

two kinds of contaminants - biological and mineral. kill biological with chlorine (or UV if you can afford it) and mineral is addressed by the fact that it likes to bond to sediments; take out the sediments via filtration. realise that wells are natural filters - the ground water has to travel through the ground which filters it/kills organics (nothing to eat). the water may acquire aspects of colour or smell which may make the water less palatable, but it is still potable. now, if you have a local source of contamination (ie, the upstream pig farm introducing biological contaminants, or some form of industry introducing hydrocarbonl/metal contaminants) they may get into your well before they die/bond to sediment and get filtered out. then all bets are off. re fluoride, tell your kids to use toothpaste and they'll get all the fluoride required.

O/P- if you are buing and having something tested. As above, test over a number of days and timeline.
Three samples, one for you (control), one for the seller, and one off to a lab.
Check for flow. While spring run off is great, August drought is what you have to watch.
A monitoring system? Not that I know of. You can filter and treat? I have triple filter and
UV at the cottage, and reverse osmosis for drinking and ice cubes.
Jumper5836 - shame about your busted garage hose and subsequent water charge and sewage charge.
I have ample water pressure in Toronto and often bust garden hoses. Even a small cut can burst a line. I never leave a garden hose unattended while pressurized.
I have has a few bust pipes and hoses. Wort culprit? Washing machine. If you read your manual... "turn off water supply after every use" and "replace lines every 3 years". Who does that.
I have stainless supply lines now.
Fridge icemaker bust last spring up north. Flooded the kitchen and main floor and basement. DRAG.
In toronto, water heater burst. Hit the water sensor contact on the floor. Click - Off goes the water main.
This switch is also hooked into the alarm system. I get notification via email, and it turns off the water.
Also, if I am not home, it shuts the water off in the house when the alarm is on. ( I have one supply line to the furnace humidifier not shut off)
Water is a precious resource, but at the same time horrendously destructive and costly if you don't have it.

did you install that electrical watershut off yourself or did it come with the house?
- had a bad experience with the fiberglass resin tank of our watersoftener rupturing... luckily I was in the basement when i started to hear dripping/running water.... The water was contained in the unfinished part of our basement....
