Great article!!
When I was very young I went to a few much lesser races ( not Porsche0 but I recall just how completely informal things were. You look at these photos of cars now worth million s and it is a reminder that they were once just tools. Still, being able to walk right up to them, not in sanitized roped off surgically clean pits, and it seems as we have lost so much in the modern era where the races are more media events than for the people attending.
Yes, of course there are nostalgia events, but not the same thins. I had an opportunity in 2010 to see the Nürburgring 24 from Indies the fence, with a free run-off the pits, and the experience was the greatest of my life in terms of racing.

Great photos, must have been a thrill in Alabama to have a 917 come whizzing by. You mentioned the informality back then, which brought back the memory of the smell of burnt castor oil.

Great article, thanks for the link...I remember going to Mosport as a teenager in the late 70's, the atmosphere was simply amazing...I've since done the Nurburgring for DTM, almost the same feeling but it's big business now...the people who love motor sports are still amazing though!

Nice article - there was an interview with Sterling Moss where he said - 'most of the cars (he raced) are in better condition now than they were then'. Now they are worth millions as historic cars, back then they were race cars where the paintwork was the last thing they worried about!
