Lightbulb Nissan GTR owner looking to make the jump onto a GT3 991.1

Hi everyone,

First of all, I wanted to say thanks for the amazing info that can be found on these forums. It is impressive and extremely helpful.

As the title says, I am looking to make the jump onto a 991.1 GT3 and have listed my GTR for sale. I have always been a huge Porsche fun and decided that 2018 will be the year.

I have started reading the forums this week and I am trying to learn as much as I can before I buy a car. I want to take my time and make a non-rushed and educated purchase.

I was wondering if you guys could confirm some of the things I have read so far and correct me as needed. They are the following:

-CPO cars still need a 3rd party inspection.

-Some early 2014 GT3s had engine issues. Porsche fixed the issue developing new parts, replacing engines with miss-fires and CELs and giving a 10 year warranty to all 2014-2016 GT3s for all engine components. (I am still a little unsure about this one)

-991.1 GT3 prices should be dropping soon once the .2 cars start hitting the streets? (Got this understanding after reading the 991.1 GT3 market thread)

-I got the impression that 2014 GT3s are lot less desirable. I am assuming this isdue to the engine issues. Would this reflect on pricing? Why are they less desirable now with the 10 year warranty?

-Getting an allocation as a non Porsche owner would be impossible?

And finally... here are some of the local GT3s available. I am not looking to buy until prices move a bit but I wouldn't mind some of your opinions.

Thanks from Calgary!

I think it would always be best to get an independent inspection when buying a used car for $160k+.

I believe all of the 2014 cars had engines swapped at port or at dealers (I think all of the Canadian car engines where changed by dealers). I believe the early 2015's may have been changed at the factory. Later 2015 cars did not have engines changed but don't have the latest revision of the engine with the coated cams. Some of these cars may have sat somewhere undesirable for several months waiting for the fix. Some 2014 cars may have had multiple engines (first for loose bolt issue, second for poor oiling/finger follower wear). I would ask for the engine serial number of any car I was looking at and a later 2015 would be worth more to me. I wouldn't pay a premium for a 2014 but that doesn't necessarily mean they are worth less excluding mileage.

the engine issues weren't limited to 2014 cars. i know several 2015 cars that had engine swaps because of engine faults (i think scored cams in all cases - and the last engine revisions came out in 2015). i doubt .1gt3 prices will drop much, dealers seem to really be propping up prices. imo, if you really want to try something special, look for a 997.2gt3 instead.

Some mis-information here. I'll try to clear this up. As a 991.1 GT3 owner, this topic is obviously an important topic for me......not because I want to sell the car, but because I want to keep it long term.

There were 2 separate engine issues related to the 991.1 GT3.

1) For the early production 2014 models (mine included), there was the famous issue of engines blowing up/catching fire because of connecting rods going through the engine block. This was a serious problem, so much so that Porsche halted deliveries temporarily and then had to replace the engines with brand new ones in all the cars which were manufactured/delivered already. For me, my car had already arrived at the dealership when this occurred, so my car got the engine replacement at the dealership before I picked it up to drive home for the first time. Porsche even paid me significant $$$ at the time as compensation for the delay this caused. This problem is solved, and no longer an issue with any of the 991.1 GT3 cars regardless of the model year. Those that had the engine replaced also got an extra year of the new car warranty (5 years instead of 4).

2) The more concerning issue over time was premature finger follower wear in the engine, which led to some cars experiencing a CEL when driving at high rpm's. Porsche has listened to the concerns of owners and investigated the issue thoroughly. The have identified the problem as a metallurgy defect (inclusions) in a small number of finger followers. Porsche claims that the VAST MAJORITY of cars do NOT have this issue. Given their findings, Porsche has stepped up and announced a 10 year engine warranty for all 991.1 GT3 cars to cover this issue. If a 991.1 GT3 experiences this issue within this 10 year period, a new engine will be provided. In other words, my 2014 GT3 has an engine warranty until 2024, which will be in place longer than the engine warranty of a brand new 2018 991.2 GT3. You can read about this in detail here: https://rennlist.com/forums/991-gt3-gt3rs-and-911r/1038118-991-1-gt3-10-year-120-000-mile-engine-warranty-update.html

I'm just impressed at the duration of the engine warranty and the engine replacement they will provide if it happens. It re-inforces to owners that this is really a low probability event. In fact, when you look at forums like Rennlist, the number of people who has been experiencing this issue has dramatically decreased recently, adding to the impression that this finger follower issue is limited to a small number of cars. Many people have driven their 991.1 GT3 very hard on multiple track days, trying to cause the problem so they can get a new engine!......and many have failed......LOL.

Don't get me wrong: the face lifted 991.2 GT3 is a fantastic car and like all face lifted cars, is an incremental improvement over the 991.1 GT3. If you can get a 991.2, DO IT! But if you can't, I can guarantee you that the 991.1 GT3 will not disappoint, as long as what you want is a PDK transmission. If you want a manual, then a 991.2 GT3 (or 991 R) is your only option.

If you want to save yourself a headache, stick with the GTR.

I don't think any of my info was incorrect but let me know if it was.

Imo000, I'm not sure why you wouldn't recommend a GT3, I certainly would. They are fantastic cars and the pick of the 911's as far as I'm concerned. But I think one should be well informed when spending that much money. I see my old GT3 is for sale at Langley and the price is dropping (still way more than I sold it for though).

GT3 all the way. While the GTR is a great car its not the same fee especially given its weight and AWD setup. If you plan to track your GT3 try to find one with the buckets, they are harder to find on the 991.1's. They are an expensive option after the fact.

Thanks for all the responses guys. It is really appreciated it!

It has cleared a lot of my doubts, specially about the engine issues and warranty. I will also get a 3rd party inspection completed.

Any places in Edmonton and Calgary that you guys could recommend?

Having a hard time finding a white GT3 for the right price !
