I am at 12 minutes and my wife is around 7. Our house is right in the middle. It's perfect! I used to commute but once you have a family commuting sucks.

For the first time in my life I'm commuting - 2-3x/week from Hamilton to Oakville. 35km, usually 50 min. in the morning, 60-90 min. coming home, occasionally as much as 1:45. I thoroughly hate it. I have to drive the Odyssey because it's the only automatic we have. I thought I'd get used to it at least a little bit, but no. But it's only for a year, and I'm 2/3 of the way through. There's absolutely no way in hell I'd do this permanently. Life is short, and to waste 2 hours a day doing something you hate is ludicrous. If it were a permanent thing we'd move, no question about it.

Nothing wrong with well serviced rural living....

We are in Heidelberg, about 10 minutes NW of Waterloo. Maybe 150 houses total.

Decent sized lots 100x200'
Reasonable prices for houses
Good internet options: 1gb down with rogers.
Lower Property taxes
Municipal Water
Neighbors know each other
3 car garage (didn't really even look at the house when we bought)

Most of our free evenings are spent at home. (or at the rink)
We go out to eat maybe once a week in KW. Conestoga mall for my wife and 15yr old daughter is 12 miinutes away. My son and I shop online and get stuff delivered to our doorstep.

I commute on average 8hrs /5 day work week. I work at 2 different sites One commute is 45 km (30-35mins) the other one is 75km 53-60 minutes depending on weather, school buses, misc farm implements

20 minutes / 20 km. No stress route.
I drove an hour + into the city for years and killed a lot of cars.

Heidelberg is not bad since there are alt least some next door neighbors for the kids to socialize with. But as a kids and from the social point of view, it's a lot more fun to live in a city than in the country. Parents time and time again choose the size of the house they can get outside of the city over what would be better for the kids.

True.

Son has 3-4 kids he calls on within walking or biking distance.

Daughter has 1 friend in walking or biking distance... She had a couple more neighborhood friends growing up, but they moved away or grew apart.

Their social lifes revolve mainly around school or team sports.

Thanks for the comments guys. I’ve driven the route at least 10 times at normal commuting hours and it is always 60-65 minutes door to door. Our kids are 16 and 18, so no worries there. They drive everywhere anyway. I’m 99% sure that I am taking the job, just one contractural hurdle to overcome.

I looked at homes in Aberfoyle (Audrey Meadows Estates) yesterday...beautiful homes but I want municipal water and these homes have private wells. Perhaps a resale home in Carlisle might work too...

I am 30 minutes, 24 km,. I take QEW or Lakeshore on Thursday’s. Etobicoke to Clarkson (Mississauga).

i am considering going back downtown for $50k bump. I am still debating if it is worth it.

Might end up moving into the core to fulfill my wife’s dream.

I'll chime in. I've never lived in TO but here I've had various commutes. The thing I found is it wasn't so much the duration (within reason) as it was if there was traffic or lights. Right now I am between 20-25 min. No traffic because I am at work way too early. The time just flys. If there is traffic then it's agony and not just because the commute is longer. My wife is about 55min on single lane highway against traffic. She doesn't mind it too much unless there is snow/ice. Then she hates it.

By far, though, my favourite commute was when I was living in a medium city in Newfoundland. 5 min by car or 10 min by ATV.

I've noticed my drive home is longer on Thursdays. Is this a thing that I've just never noticed before having to commute? I could see Fridays being worse, but Thursdays?

Pretty sure I've seen your car around. I'm 6km out from the Beach to york / southcore financial, driving along lakeshore or hop on/off gardiner.

I particularly enjoy it when I get the google notification saying "Heavy traffic for your drive home - ETA 15 minutes" - lol

15km. Most days in the summer I ride my bike, the path is right in front of my house. I spent too much of my youth in traffic trying to commute, slightly downsized but I feel my health has got better. We also decided when we chose the location for the shop it would be easily accessible for everyone and located near restos etc. Nothing like having a shop that is hard to reach, in a horrible part of town and then clients can't even get a coffee or food
