Hi everyone,

I just can't seem to get enough of Canada this fall/winter! I just booked 3 days in downtown Montreal between Christmas and New Years for a visit.

I know, I know, it will be very cold but I'll be prepared.

Thanks to everyone who helped with my Toronto request last month. I had a memorable short visit and was able to get a bunch of landscape and city photos that I'm very happy with.

My main goal is photography of unique sights. So far it looks like the architecture of the Old Town and churches will keep me busy. Any other suggestions?

Best Poutine is debatable but the must try place is La Banquise (at any hour of the day/night)

For sights you'll likely want to head up Mount Royal to get a nice view of Downtown though maybe a little cliche.

I will also be back in MTL staying at my parents cottage over the holidays, definitely a better "winter city" than Toronto.

Hello there, I know I will be blasted, hated, threatened, whatever...Montreal is nothing more than your typical North American big city, skyscrapers included. Food is definitely better than in English Canada. Pedestrian crossing at red lights, optional, car coming = you wait, no car coming you cross no matter the colour. Potholes aplenty. Downtown, English is King, outside downtown it's Quebecois. Rue Saint Catherine has all the expensive shops you would expect in a big city. There are of course lots of bars and night life if that's your thing. Rue Crescent has a number of good restaurants (Rue means street). At the end of the day simply Google "Montreal Top Ten" and see what appeals to you.

Don't miss going to 'Old Montreal' while you are there, but don't drive as cobble stone streets are narrow especially if there are snow banks

Great shots. With your interest in architectural photography you should invest in a tilt shift lens. My Canon 24mm TS is my favourite lens in my kit.

Beautiful pictures.

If you like to play poker spend an afternoon or evening at the Playground Poker Club.
Its about 15 min drive from downtown.
Cash sit and play tables and small buy-in tournaments every day

You have to become a member but I think its free.

and its a pretty good city to see a hockey game if u can get a ticket

The view of downtown from Parc Jean Drapeau is hard to beat, and there are a couple interesting buildings there as well (biosphere, casino, pool grounds -although the latter might be under construction-).


Old port, old Montreal, classics. Avoid eating there if you can, the food is very generic touristy/business overpriced, but the rooftop terraces are great (in the summer ... not sure how they adjust for winter)
Alternatively to the old montreal rooftop terraces, see if you can get into Les Enfants Terribles, the one at the top of the Place Ville Marie building (http://www.jesuisunenfantterrible.co...e-ville-marie/). Bar/Restaurant, great view, you most likely want to book in advance.

There's a ferris wheel too on Old Port , I haven't been on it but the view must be nice.


Get up on Mt Royal and head for the Belvedere (I think it's called the Chalet Mont Royal). The last bit is walking only, but you'll get a great view of downtown. Highly recommended at sunrise on a bitterly cold morning, if you're sufficiently motivated.


You can walk around the Plateau check out colorful houses, notorious montreal outdoor stairs and parks.

The Centre de Commerce Mondial right off of Square Victoria is neat for photogs, and a good place to get a break from a cold day, and meander further into the metro and underground malls. Don't play on spending any real time there, it's just "neat".


Dunno how into food you are, but for poutine I'd recommend Frite Alors!, definitely my favourite above La Banquise although that is the equivalent of arguing about which oil is better.
Fancier, Candide is a small place in a church basement in St Henri specializing in local ingredients. Fantastic, reasonably priced, highly recommended. Not a ton of food, if you're into huge portions you might

Montreal in winter or late fall is depressing as fuuuu ..La Banquise is the no.1 r/montreal choice... Drive a beater to St Henri as a luxury car might get torched by anarchists
