Hagerty not allowing removal of collision for winter anymore

I phoned Hagerty today to remove the collision coverage for my cars for winter storage but I was told by a broker there that they no longer do that. She said they realize people with collector cars don't drive them in the winter so this is reflected in the premiums (I didn't see any change in the amount on my policy this year). I can usually save hundreds of dollars for the 4 or 5 months I put my cars away but it looks like that has been stolen so be warned if you have an older car insured with them.

From my understanding, Hagarty has always done this. When I cross shop them with my regular insurance company, I always take that into consideration when I look at the rate. Currently both my 2002 and 2005 are with State Farm and I downgrade them both to fire and theft for the winter. Hagarty was actually more money when I calculated the winter months. Hagarty is still king for cars 25 years and older though.

Yup, 30 yr old 944 is only $260 per year with Hagerty, and that includes road side assistance.

First Silver Wheels, then Hagerty, have always been like this for me. It's always been full coverage year-round.

I have been with Silver Wheels/Hagerty for a decade and every year they have always sent me back a partial refund cheque when I have asked them to take the collision off for winter until now.

It was so cheap I wouldn’t have the balls to ask for some money back once I store it
Then again it could have gone towards my kfc and Mobil one fund.

Im also with statefarm which operates as Certas no longer allows me to switch to fire and theft only in the winter and has made me keep full collision for months my car is parked. I'll be leaving once my policy is up

the billions insurance companies make is simply not enough .. they want more ...

I spoke with my SF agent in the summer, and he told me this has been reversed, and fire and theft only is back for those that choose to do so in the winter months.

I have not called yet to do so... Need to check that I don't need drive clean 1st.

I'm with State Farm and they said they no longer to that!

Call again. They changed it and now you can take off road coverage. I just paid the bill and it's $135 for 6 months for my 996

Okay so they took it away and now brought it back?

yes. They took it away at one point and told me no more fire and theft at the beginning of 2017. However, few months later, they told me what they could do is to remove the road coverage or something but it would still cost slightly more than fire and theft.

If I recall correctly, I used to pay $10 a month for fire and theft only but now I am paying effectively $22.50 a month.

Just took my collision / liability off with TD Meloche.

Cosmo Kramer 11-09-2017 09:51 PM

I remember having a chat with my agent about that. She said Certas tried to make it so you couldn't take off road coverage on seasonal cars in the winter. They thought it was a liability, as owners would have a legal pink slip in the car so they may go and drive without insurance. After the change, there was a huge back lash from the policy holders so they started allowing it again.
