Default So what's a 951 like to own nowadays anyhow?

Attention die-hard 951 drivers. I have a freind who may want to unload (at a premium of course) his 1989 951. The car is immaculate and already has some of the essential work done:

1- refreshened bottom end (Mantis' work)
2- the right suspension bits (cup coilovers with cup bars)
3- great paint and no winters, ever!
4- 112,000 km on the clock
5- Autothority stage II chips/spring? Whatever that's worth anyhow
6- refreshened gearbox with stock LSD and gearset (clutch?)
7- two sets of wheels and tires, original plus factory Carerra RS magnesium Cup wheels (yes, 964 RS wheels from England)
8- Crappy, power, non-sport front seats just itching to be replaced by GT3 seats
9- Rote front splitter and factory 968 rear wing
10- 968 side mirrors
11- 968 door handle assemblies
12- Big brakes up front with fronts moved to the rear (or something like that)

My question is what these cars are like to drive nowadays? I've been somewhat spoiled by the fact that my 996 (even with coilovers) is just so nice to drive all day long, as my daily driver (I even drive on my Corsa track tires for the street all summer long). The problem is that I am developing a serious ulcer driving it on the track. As much as I enjoy myself, the thought of throwing $128k around the track makes me nervous. What can I expect out of driving/owning a 951? Is this car really suitable for track and everyday driving as well as my 996 has been? Please help. I'm a lost soul. I wish that I could afford to have both but that's not in the cards. The thought of picking up a 951 like this for well under $30k (by mid-spring) and still having a ton of budget to throw at it seems very appealing to me.

Any assistance/advice/support/criticism/bashing is welcomed.

Thanks in advance,

Alon

Alon, that sounds like a prime example. I would expect that market value in Ontario is somewhere in the 20-23K$ range.

On the road I find my turbo S a little rough and passengers complain that the suspension is a little too stiff for Edmonton roads (expansion joints are rough). A few small upgrades and you can easily take 951 into the 300 rwhp range. MAP/MAF, injectors, wastegate, turbo can be bought in packages from tuners and will crank out amazing power. Even with my relatively minor mods, the power is outstanding even though you have to wait for 3400 RPM before things get interesting.

But... it is 15 years old and things break. There is no avoiding this. Everything rubber needs to be replaced in the engine bay. CV joints are weak and can't handle much abuse; I've learned this the hard way... twice. I've since eased my acceleration on bumpy roads

I would be willing to stack up that 951 against nearly any car under 100K$ on any course (except drag) and expect it not to be embarrased.

Hopefully this helps convince you to ****** that car up quick

Justin

I had a 944 Turbo S years ago (I have to say that I hated Porsche's interior design for it) but other than that, it was a great car. I know that getting 325 HP is pretty easy work for these cars and yes, a new 996 wouldn't be much of a threat on the track. I just have to consider the points that you stated, eing that it's 15 years old and there are a few weak areas that need constant attention. I doubt that I can get this car in the price range that you mentioned and it would most likely be just over $25k. I'll have to give this some serious thought. If not, perhaps there's someone else on this forum who may be interested in the car.

Thanks for your feedback.

I didn't want to go to Shannonville. It kicks the crap out of my brakes and it was damn cold as well. I may not make the May date because I'll be in Europe for two weeks in May but I plan to go for every Dexter Day as well as some NorthEast Porsche Region days at Mt. Tremblant and Watkins Glenn (especially since I'll be able to take the ferry acorss to Rochester). Have you met David Robinson at OMP? He's got the 1988 951 withj the Rote front and rear Spoilers.

Let's do lunch at OMP sometime.

Jaak, I'm in Montreal for the next two days. I'll ring you when I get back. Hey Eyal, if you're asking about me buying this particular car, I'm not sure as of yet. I have until Spring to decide. Eyal, Israeli?

30 years? Man, you are a pillar of patience, my friend. I've been here for 3.5 years and I'm ready to commit suicide.

Enjoy your time off and let me know via email if you'll be getting together with Mario over the next few weeks.
