many cars have been bought with bore score issues that the buyer is unaware of and the results are usually pretty miserable. I would consider this even more catastrophic than an IMS . between these two issues though I wouldn't go anywhere near a M-96 engine unless I was prepared to throw the car away at anytime.
The instance may be low but the severity is extreme and there is just so much historical unknown with a used vehicle.

but with bore scoring, your internals are usually in decent shape that they can be reused (after being measured and ultrasonic cleaned) An IMSB failure will take out a lot more internals than scored cylinders.

I would argue scored cylinders happens more often than bad IMSB's.
