I think an early 2.5L Boxter is a better value than a 944 for the track and easier to find a descent example.

My understanding is that there are now enough used Boxster engines around that rebuilding one is not worth it.

i've been watching 996 4s prices for awhile and the ones in good condition are selling in the 30-32k range.

many people have been posting in the 38-42k range and ultimately they end up having to drop their pants then it finally sells.

there was one i saw listed in bc that went from 42k all the way to 30k where it finally sold. talk about unrealistic expectations

Hey guys.

I just signed up and am new to the forum (first day). I have been trying to figure out pricing and it appears this forum is most connected to helping me with a problem.

I am looking at buying a 2002 C4S with 56,000km. I would consider the condition of the interior and exterior to be excellant. Mechanically the IMS bearing, rear seal and clutch were just replaced and there is some documetationabout oil changes and small repairs. The asking price is 40K (plus HST)..its a dealer who got it on trade in.

Is this price considered good...bad...decent? When looking at autotrader it seems that alot of the low mileage 996's are going in the high 30's - low 40's.

Any thoughts / feedback / help to guide me with my first is much appreciated!

with the m96 engine it is a roll of the dice.
Dealer , assuming non porsche, with no records - 40k sounds high.
If you do buy, get a full independent ppi, with borescope.

Good price if it's had that work done already. Figure that's 4k in maintenance included. Seems like that one sold though

General consensus is that low mileage are the ones you should be worried about because they weren't driven enough

The work was done at AutoSelect (Newmarket) The dealer did not want his guys working on the car. The car is in amazing condition. Car still available until tomarrow evening then it movs on the next potential buyer. What would be an appropriate price to pay for this car?

PS thanks hyper and badcid!

It's extremely hard to find good condition 996 that's already has IMS done.

All OEM parts used for other maintenance?

Ln engineering IMS?

Call mechanic and ask for feedback.

Assuming favorable answer and clean ppi I'd say 38k would be very good. Only reason higher than range above is because of the low miles. Most at this age are around 100k

Just look at USA pricing and you'll see it's cheaper than buying from thfro

The garage that was used is a very reputable Porsche garage. I'm assuming all parts are to spec...although I am not a tech / mech guy and pretty rely on the internet to conenct myself with knowlegable people.

Shooting for 38k with a clean record (as inspected and reported on by the mechanic)..then the price is not absurd....this is good..

I would still ask for a PPI done by a shop of your choosing, not theirs.
Might be the best money you spend.

Pay attention to the bold part

it will be expensive to get that checked but it could save you a $20k motor rebuild. Dont ignore this advice.

many cars have been bought with bore score issues that the buyer is unaware of and the results are usually pretty miserable. I would consider this even more catastrophic than an IMS . between these two issues though I wouldn't go anywhere near a M-96 engine unless I was prepared to throw the car away at anytime.

The instance may be low but the severity is extreme and there is just so much historical unknown with a used vehicle.

Is it just me or does $38K sound like far too much for a C4S? For not much more you can get into a base 997.2 can't you?
