For those still doing some homework, the stock 996T battery looks to weigh a bit over over 23 Kgs, and has an 80 AH reserve (versus 70AH and 60AH for the lighter stock GT2 and GT3 batteries respectively).

The 405/540 Shorais under consideration weigh under a tenth of that:



but have a lower (27AH/36AH) reserve capacity, hence us not being able to leave the car parked for more than a couple of weeks or so if we want it to start again unassisted.

Still keen to take that sack of potatoes out from in front of the dashboard though, even if it means carrying a light jumpstarter for the odd time I might leave my lights on.

It's a huge saving. For those of us with C4s, there is a 100kg weight penalty against a C2. Changing the seats clawed back 30kg net, and this will give me a further 15kg. Factor in Heater blower delete, cup pipe, LWF, no rear seat backs, ducktail, no spare etc might see me take back all of that difference. Of course it's a moot point performance-wise because we all do 7/10ths at the track. Yeah right

Of course a C2 can do all that too then you're still 100kg behind...
What's the consensus on CCA reqts? Will the 405 do or go 540?

They could, but they don't. Well at least not as much.

I will likely go 540, as like an iPhone you can't upgrade it after the fact. The 405 is listed as suitable for up to 3,000cc. I figure a high compression 3.6l could use a bit more capacity in reserve. Hopefully I'll still get a reasonable price.

Place round the corner from my work Biggles Racing does the 405 for $387.30, and the 540 for $491.20

Damn, I wasn't banking on that as he replaced his battery only 2 years ago (in Masterton on the 2014 SITT). 7/10ths my foot.

I can envision the pit lane at Taupo with everyone waving the others on the track. Then hoofing it straight after they take off. A bit like the cycling pursuit.

Just get one of these guys. They great for jumpstarting, charging phones, flashlight etc etc. Save the weight with the battery and keep one of these handy and you'll be fine. Macca and I have one each and I wouldn't be surprised if others do too.

You have to recover the seats right? In that case go black as the leather is cheaper and you won't have a headache with the match. Door cards are easy to recover in black and black mats. That has to be the most cost effective solution?

Looking a bit deeper at it John, it isn't the car we all think it is. Paint is better than some, few chips and chunks and resprays, rear lights crazed, front plastic lenses chipped etc but it is presentable as is externally with a good groom and small details sorted out. Internally we are all suckered by the drivers bolster and rear seat pad that has found life and is growing. The carpets are dirty too.
My thoughts would be - to keep it as you intend - I.e. not massive spend - is to work with what you have. The drivers bolster repaired and front seat leather worked over by a specialist. The seats and trim out and a pro shampoo and vac of the carpets. Steering wheel is horrible. Door cards and furniture are good. A few nicks here and there but so what?
Leave it as is and it is a fine looking car when you are done. Maybe not such a great combo but it is what it is. A lighter interior is a nice change but maybe not everyone's taste.
Aaron dropped me into Conti's in his C4 and I was mighty impressed with the smoothness which yours demonstrated too on the drive home. Aaron's interior combo of the clay brown is one I like because it is different.
I guess it comes down to how much you want to sink into it.
