Bridgestone RE71R vs. standard summer tires?

I am not sure if we are talking about the same occurrence at TWS or a separate event, but the car I saw that had and issue with the right rear was a 993. The right front was also showing signs of chunking. I was very surprised to see it given the performance of the tire on a GT4 at COTA. Before I saw this tire, I had only positive things to say about the RE-71R, excellent initial grip, predictable and good grip to the cord. I preferred it to the MPSC2 for drivability and feel.
I don't race, I only DE and instruct, so no competition. I almost always run my tires from new down to the cords. Given how long I've been doing this and estimating 3 sets of tires a year, I've done this with 24 sets of tires. I've never seen one that looked even close to this one - all of mine have been the typical cords peaking through on the inside or outside. It is possible he ran over something with that tire but I don't think that failure is the sole result of the tire wearing out. If it is, it is a lot different that the previously mentioned 24 sets. Not going to argue about it, just providing a data point.

I have had a few sets of these and they require pretty close attention - rotate frequently and flip 1/2 way through life. I learned that after my first set, corded on the outside after 3 days. The outside edge is super soft on these.
Regarding the failure in question, I agree with globe. This tire should have been rotated to the left side earlier and or flipped. TWS is hard on the right side tires, especially rr on a 911.

Talked to a friend who does a lot of street tire testing for magazines and 1Lap. I asked about the Hankook RS4 vs the RE71R for my GT350. His comments were the RS4 was a better track tire than the 71R as it handled heat better. The 71R was better Autox and track for 3 track laps or so and then it would fall off.

I would like to know what Bridgestone says about the tire. I advised the owner to submit pictures to them. I will see if there was a reply.

The R-S4's love heat and for the first lap or so at the track, grip is just Ok. Once they heat up, its like a switch thrown, all of a sudden, you have tons of grip. That being said, the Re-71's are faster.
My plan is not to use the R-S4's for most of the practice sessions as they seem to wear like iron and then put on the Re-71's for the last few sessions and timed runs.
I have used the R-S4's for just 1 Ax and have another one coming up next weekend. Ill run the R-S4s for one practice session and the RE-71's for another and then see what works best for timed runs

I have a set of R-S4's and Re-71's for my Boxster. I have run tham both for AX and the track.

FWIW, delaminated tires should be offered back to the manufacturer.
They might react unfavorably and say stupid things and make it a bad experience. But there is a chance they appreciate it and maybe even reward it.

I sent pictures of the failed tire to a friend who works for a tire company, he is responsible for track tires at that company. By just providing the two pictures, his view was this is a carcass-tread delamination and it was likely due to insufficient negative camber. He said to run the tires with higher pressures to provide better support for the sidewall and to (as M Globe suggested) rotate the tires more frequently.
I just got this picture last night and on closer inspection, you can clearly see how far the tire was rolled over onto the side wall. I will certainly make this inspection part of my post-run review of student cars running a street setup.
IIRC the car was also seeing double duty as it was being shared by a father and son.

im a fan of the re 71 over cup 2s.
at sebring i set my fastest lap on the 71s. ive gone through many sets of cup 2s, great tires, but the 71 price is hard to beat and after 12 half hour sessions they look half worn.
