Thanks Gary! I have met you and your mini during a Mosport 6th Gear event last year while testing the 924S Chumpcar. Endurance racing at Mosport kills the left front outside edge, so your experience/advice is valuable.

Thanks Bill for the input as well. Your camber/toe settings help me make some decisions.

Just tried out a new set of RE71R's at the track and can confirm what others have said - 33 psi hot seems to be a good spot for them. I targetted 33psi hot front/rear, started out ~28-29 cold and they'd get to 33psi after a few laps. After a 20 min session they'd creep up to ~36psi and start getting greasy there.

Overall great tire, wears evenly on my alignment (-2.7 camber front, -1.8 rear) but they do wear out quickly for a street tire. Really sticky, though. Set a time attack class record with them!

Can anybody explain what happened here? Brand new RE-71R's, C student ran them on a stock Honda Civic SI, with -1.5 Camber, 0 Toe in the front, hot pressure was 37psi. This is the front left after the weekend, all tread from the center of the tire is gone. Rears look fine (-2 Camber, .10 toe in).

Yeah, they were likely overdriven. Shoulders have a bit of graining, but all the tread is still there. The center block is grained and nearly gone. Front right has similar wear, just not as bad.

They are seriously overheated tires, too much input (steering, throttle and brake). I would suspect this car was understeering everywhere and the driver just kept turning the wheel to make the corner.

Based on how they look and the feedback here they were over inflated.

So, finally got to drive the RE71r's in anger this weekend..

Overall I must say they are a very impressive tire, tons of grip right from the get go, then warmed up quickly to provide good consistent laps for about 10 to 15 mins then started to get a little squirrely.. For me that is the perfect DE tire.

Regarding the pic above, I can see that these tires do not like being over driven, if you are not smooth you will end up with tires looking like the one above. I found If I was too aggressive on the steering wheel I could easily provoke understeer. I found the initial turn in not quite as sharp as a R-comp tire or hoosier, which i think is part of the reason you could end up easily overdriving the tire.

As for pressures, I only did a half day and ended up settling for 33 Front and 34 rear, the car worked well, and the tires looked great at the end of the day, a little feathering on the front from the slight understeer on turn in but nothing to be anyway concerned about, outer edges of the tire looked great with no excessive wear. I never got a chance to do tire temps yesterday, next time I will have a buddy ready at track exit to measure those for me.

From an alignment perspective i ended up with:

Front height (mm) 97
Rear height (mm) 99

Front:
Toe 0° total
camber -3° 2'
caster 5.2°

Toe(rear) 11' /side 22' total
camber -2° 4'
caster, rear 3.4 on the Motorsport gauge

Next Steps: Will get the wheels off the car and have a better look at the tires and see how they faired, Need to do some tweeks on the setup to see if i can improve the initial turn in without upsetting the rear too much, and then do some data overlay with what I have for the hoosiers I was running to see where the differences are.

Overall, supper happy, lap times were consistent and fast, tires were predictable at the edge. I must say, these are now my favorite streetable track tire!

I've run the RE71's now at 5 events. Same set of tires. Cayman S with 2.5/2.0 camber front / rear. They grip tremendously for street tires. On my previous BMW I ran NT-01s. Not sure they are that level but they do have very good wear.

The question / problem I'm having is that they gain about 13-15 psi per 20min de session. The NT-01s gained at most 8 psi. Has anyone else experienced this effect? I started at 26psi yesterday at Road Atlanta and once they hit 29/30 I drove hard and set my best time ever. Ordinarily I start around 30 psi and these tires are up over 40 psi in no time.

dont run them over 35psi it ruins them
this outsized gain is only in the first session of the day. I take my tire gauge with me and bleed them in the hotpit during the first session as soon as I hit 35 (or 34 and I hit a train) and I bleed them down to 30.
after first session i bleed them down to 1 pound below target pressure
after next sessions I bleed them down to target pressure
