Default Triptonic v. manual transmission?

Have been instructing for over 15 years and until today all my students have had manual transmissions. Today my student had an '03 Boxster automatic with triptronic. Fist time at the track so first and second sessions kept it in automatic to learn the line. Last session put it in the 5 speed triptronic and at Sebring pretty much kept it in 4th, 3rd at hairpin, 5th on back straight, 4th into 17, etc.

My question is how similar are the 5 speed triptronic gears to a manual 5 speed? With a 5 speed manual you would go into 3rd at T3, 2nd at the hairpin, etc. What about a triptronic as a student progresses?

Thanks!

My DEncar is a tip 964. The problem it is just a 4 speed, and first is all but useless on the track. So it is a second per lap slower than a manual. But it is fun!

Looks pretty close.... worst i saw is about 7% diff..that's not much to write home about and you know about all the trade offs with differences in gearing. might even be slightly better............or slightly worse.
