On fully-warmed Toyo RRs. Near the end of the day. There were 25-30 mph wind gusts, and the possibility of fluid on the track. Two minutes later, two cars hit the tire wall on the exit to Turn 1.

I don't think tires were the problem. But it sure came around fast. VR is probably correct. Not enough throttle on exit because I turned in early and was waiting for the car to come around...then didn't react quickly enough when the tires started talking to me. Should have opened the wheel. Driver error.

Clearly the gas filler flap acted as an air brake and saved him!

Turn 1 and 17 at Sebring are so difficult for the lack of reference points. You have to basically look through the wall. Easy to get caught out.

There are lots of reference points in 17 anyway, I think it's just harder to pick them up peripherally in 2d then it is in 3d.

gas flap coming up also stopped the car from flipping. Too late trail braking- too much steering angle- no throttle. Bet you couldn't do that again and not hit something.

Agreed - 17 is better than 1.

Now if I could just stop crabbing in on 17 I might be able to take the turn better!

I race Sebring for the 1st time this year. I did almost the same thing except a 4 wheel power slide. I was looking for the guy I just got around at T17 and missed my braking point. We both had a good laugh over that. It was the last lap and he held the position.

Last weekend my tire pressures were too low and I went into turn 1 too fast and ended up in a 4 wheel drift. Luckily I was able to control it but had to visit the men's room when I came off the track.

VR,
can you elaborate? I thought the rear was too light going in. He was past the apex and kept steering input with no throttle. So the rear was too light. Can you clarify?

There WAS throttle. 5,000 RPM. Just not a LOT of throttle.

Yes exactly. Rear too light, too much steering angle, neutral throttle at high heavily loaded up RPM, and bumps ...

VR,
Ok. That is what i thought. thanks. Also I usually shift 1 gear down into the corner to allow me some throttle steer as I trail off the brakes.

i have spun turn 1 in traffic. full 360.
So nice to be able to drive away from it.

It can go either really good or really bad.

It is a such an underestimated corner. Anything that is slightly off with your cars setup, suspension, sway bars etc all 'reveal' themselves if you approach the limit in that corner.

Agreed - timing of earliest possible throttle application is key in these corners and you need to ask yourself whether there is anything with the car that holds you back from doing that.

Similarity to T17 IMHO this is a very long corner and you usually have ample time to to make corrections and/or slow down before you lose control of the car. If you are extremely consistent in terms of your approach to these corners it is quite easy to feel the rhythm of the bumps and let the car float over them.
