update - new options
FYI - once Simpson got my helmet back, I talked with them further. they gave a number of options:
1) fix mine and return.
2) full refund
3) pay an uncharge and get a nicer helmet. they let me pay $200 for a carbon Devil Ray. there was also a $150 for a composite Venator. I think one other option.

Just got this from Simpson.
Simpson Performance Products, Inc. announces the return of the popular Snell SA 2015 Voyager 2 helmet. We plan to begin selling Voyager 2 helmets, effective today.
The Voyager 2 helmets in size Extra Small – Large with manufacturing dates in 2016 and yellow chin straps, were voluntarily recalled by Simpson in April, 2017 to address a potentially faulty chin strap design.
Snell SA 2015 Voyager 2 helmets sold from this date forward, will have black chin straps. Regardless of the manufacturing date if the Voyager 2 has black chin straps, it is not a part of the recall and good for the racing.
We appreciate the support our customers and dealers have shown to us. We will continue our efforts to get the helmets involved in the recall, Sizes Extra Small – Large with manufacturing dates in 2016 and yellow chin straps, back for repair.”
We apologize for the inconvenience our recent recall has caused. We have taken the proper steps to notify our customers and repair the helmets. It is without a doubt the right thing to do; we never thought twice about it. Maintaining the trust of our customers is paramount.”
