So we will continue with the weed whacker engines for the foreseeable future. Hope F1 can survive.

Todt is nothing but a politician these days with all their bull**** and inability to know what's right. He's not a race fan or car enthusiasts at this point.

This is typical socialist logic at its finest!!! You freely admit that there is less pollution created from all the cars in an F1 race as compared to just 1 flight from Paris to New York, but F1 has to be an example to the world?!? You do realize that there are 7.8 billion people on the planet and as a percentage, F1 has an audience that is a tiny fraction of that population, right? They don't tune in to watch F1 for an environmental impact report or exercise....

The fans have been complaining about lack of noise for years... the ratings and attendance has been going down for years... you may not have to worry about F1 emissions if this trend continues because NO ONE WILL CARE!!!

There are ways to make V8 engines cleaner through thermal effeciancy, which will satisfy the mantra of being road relevant.

These new rule changes have made the cars extremely fast, perhaps the fastest F1 cars in history, so I'm keeping an open mind with regard to this new formula, but we haven't gone to an F1 race since the V6 turbo era because it's not compelling in terms of level of competition or noise. Simpleton perhaps, but we vote with our wallets. I don't think driverless rally cars or F1 cars will be compelling as well. No one cares about remote control racing... Someone wake Jean up!

Rant over...

He and the rest of the FIA are total hypocrite tards. The carbon footprint of F1, from all the 747-400's that transport all the cars and teams all over the world, to all the private jets flown by literally EVERYONE of significance, to all the helicopters shuttling drivers to and from the track each day, is enormous. The output of the cars isn't even registering.

This type of logic is why I prefer vintage racing to most current racing series ...

NASCAR fans are a part of society. Do you think think they would show up to races (or watch) if those deep, loud V8s were quiet like a street Camery? Why do Chevy, Ford, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Nissan/Infinity spend so much money tuning the exhaust on some of their cars, usually making them louder, if society and their customers would not except them any longer? What have all the fan surveys about F1 indicated?? That they liked the sound of the older, louder race cars and dislike the more quiet flatulent sounding ones we have now. He's smart enough to know these things, but prefers to stick his head in the sand to what fans really want. Instead, acts as a politician trying to tell them what they should want.

Society? Who cares about society!

It's what F1 fans care about.

What a dope!

Any concern F1 implies they have for the environment is all smoke and mirrors. Has anyone seen the hundreds of transport vehicles used by the F1 road show parked far away from the track to avoid detection. So much of that is unnecessary and unrelated to the race. Reduce the amount of non race related equipment by 1% and you could burn all the fuel you wanted in the cars and still come out ahead environmentally.

All the above is true. They could mandate that teams (driver's, mechanics, engineers, team principals) ALL have to fly commercially, together or at least try to all fly on the same flight, and the fuel, pollution and carbon footprint would all be reduced dramatically. How about stopping every driver and team principals from flying into the track from their hotels in a private helicopter? but that would be too unpopular with the teams... so we'll just make the actual "show" part of the enterprise, the actual cars that people come to see, less interesting to set an example of how green we are, even though we're not burning very much fuel.... hypocritical at best and one of the worst business decisions to have come out of the FIA and that's saying something...

(now the rant is really over)

These days F1 is, more than ever before, about the spectacle, and as the appeal of the cars is diminished so goes the spectacle...sure, the cars are still the pinnacle of technology but I think that resonates hollow to most fans, at least here in the States. I, for one, miss the high-pitched wail of the 90s/00s when they sounded like ghouls rising from the crypt though I know that didn't appeal to everybody either.....

That said, I do feel the racing has improved outside of the usual dominant teams so I continue to follow it, noise or not.

F1 cars always sounded like **** anyway. Awful awful noise. Who really cares if they use turbo motors.

As much as I kind of agree that F1 should be moving in the direction of technological advances (higher thermal efficiency and energy recovery), you are totally right VR. Great point.
