Play stupid games, win stupid prizes: Illegal racers in Berlin sentenced to life ...
Two knucklheads decided to have an illegal road race in a Mercedes and an Audi back on February 1, 2016, blowing through several red lights in the early morning hours at 100mph, which resulted in one of them crashing into a Jeep that had green at the intersection. The 69 year old driver of the Jeep died.
The court in Germany has sentenced both drivers to life in prison for murder. The convicts are appealing to the German federal court. Racing is for tracks, not public roads, and the courts in Germany have set a signal that there will be dire consequences. https://goo.gl/maps/kqiScv8fXZu (google street view of the site) Image of crash site from 2016 |
I think that if the punishment more often fit the crime, a lot of unfortunate things like this would be less common.

The Jeep driver was a retired physician, widowed, and father of two in the reports I've seen.
Tragic ending to this 'race'. |
Kudos to the court

Really stupid since there is some thing called the AUTOBAHN available!!!
I am referring to driving @100 MPH+, not racing of course. |
It seems like people only take notice of things like this when some unfortunate bystander gets killed.
Every year we have to read about boneheads in this country that do things like these high-speed coast-to-coast runs and their subsequent internet braggings. The only difference I see is the death of an innocent non-participant. Regardless of your finances and car ownership, there are many avenues to go explore your limits away from public roads. ANYONE can afford to do an AutoX or go to a drag strip. I agree with harsh penalties for these chowderheads that continue to put the public at risk. Rant over. |
This guy skipped life in prison. Problem was he also sentenced a number of of other people too. Damn that's fast.

Usually such accidents are handled as manslaughter (which can also earn you a sentence for life in Germany) - given the various cases, where somebody killing somebody else on purpose are judged as manslaughter, I'm not sure I'd agree with the verdict.
However, this goes along the line that, by going to fast and running so much redlights (eleven), their actions were "contingent intention" which counts as a requirement for murder. @333pg333 That guy got what he deserved - doing (>) 280 km/h (=175 mph) with 10 yr old winter tyres...:grr: |
That's as may be but he took out other people and left survivors that will never get over it.
