Being an organizer of DEs (at COTA no less), it has nothing to do with the corner workers thinking the car is on fire (dropping fluids is more reasonable- corner workers aren't as stupid as you think they are)...it has everything thing to do with a driver not being under control and knowing when to dial it back. A spinning car is an object that is more easily hit. It's about the safety of all participants on track.

Agree that that this guy should go to a drift event.

1) HPDE?
2) Was that even a passing zone?
3) How did the driver qualify for solo with that entitlement attitude?

Chin is open passing anywhere with a point in all run groups. We were also allowed to go over the gators as long as the car was in control.

He seemed to be in control when I saw him on track, just not really respecting the expectations placed on drivers.

I'd really like to know how that thing held up. My assumption is that, like a maserati, it's a cool car for 5 minutes until something falls off and injures you.

Chin passing rules per their website FAQ

2. Passing is allowed only in the designated zones discussed in the drivers meeting. In the Green group no passing is allowed in the turns.

by your statement.

I was there. It was open passing everywhere with a point and up to students to mediate that. Pretty intense actually. There were a few instructors not happy about it.

Like the world generally works exmb....documentation comes later. I think they were experimenting with it because I'm a semi-regular instructor with them, and I was surprised by it as well.

I think it will breed a much more aware driver - but I don't know if that will be because everyone's skill is lifted or if darwinism will work faster.

Did instructors know prior to signing up or was it sprung on them (based on your not happy comment above)?

I was there too, and saw some of this while on track. Chin has allowed open passing in ALL groups with a point at COTA for at least a year, and it works great. I suspect the reason this person was BF'd the first time was not the oversteer but rather the huge amounts of wheelspin tire smoke... The cameras at COTA see EVERYTHING and the folks in the control room are somewhat particular. And I am guessing that he/she was told not to do it again, but persisted and was brought in again because they did.

I'm sure we'll see some online review of the car on youtube that has that footage.

An HPDE is not a drift event and is not a race. Period.

Ah, big deal! Looks like the guy had reasonable skilz... And I LOVE that car!

Chin has been open passing for some time, and it works fine.

Based on what I've read on jalopnik and the youtube comments, he was BF'd and warned twice and then did it a third time. I mean, if you want to drift, go drift. Don't go to to COTA for $1000 with Chin if you want to drift.
