I don't even think about pushing up/pulling down when driving. I do try to relax, and I'm not always successful. When you see me without gloves it is because I'm trying to relax - for some reason gloves make it worse for me. I know I've been bad if my hands are sore at the end of the day.
In the SRF, it was very natural to consciously pull down.
I'd like to be like the video below. That's our very own VR driving Good Girl some years ago.

Mike,
The fella driving is as calm as can be, his hands look like he has total control, but no hard grip.
Dumb question, he is not being instructed on driving is he?

Btw, if you really want to learn basics, read Speed Secrets by Ross Bentley. It really helped me to understand the basics and make my own conclusions. There are a lot of contradictory statement out there. You will have different instructors telling you contrary things...and both can be right in their own way. But only you can internalize what they say and make it happen.

you have two hands for a reason - use both and don't overanalyze. Once your brain adjusts to the speeds and how car handles, you will relax. Your brain is in panic mode for now. Just make conscious effort to remind yourself to relax once in awhile and focus on the important things (looking up, brake application, smoothness etc)

An unfortunate side effect of having the microphone outside the car is the engine noise drowns out VR's sage advice. Fortunately, I have a background in signal processing and using some sooper sofisticated techniques I was able to enhance this valuable audio:

Well he is a pro. He actually was invited and came to the advanced DE at the Glen with NNJR. He did virtual track walk and you could pay for a coaching session. I thought I had enough to work on, but next year I'd like to take advantage of something like this.

One thing not mentioned is that you can practice relaxing your hands in every day driving. See how lightly you can grip the wheel with the correct hand position. If you do this enough, it will become muscle memory and much easier to recall on the track.

I would add one additional comment to the excellent advice previously offered in the thread and that is when looking for DE days next year consider signing up for as many Car Control clinics as you can. Nothing beats pushing the limits of grip in the safe environment of a skid pad plus you learn quickly to look ahead, have fast hands, be progressive on throttle and brake, and it can even teach "in a spin, both feet in"!
SCDA Northeast offers frequent and well run clinics.
Now that there is funny

2nd DE? You're doing well. Keep working on basics. Line, smoothness, situational awareness and get yourself another pile of days before worrying about small tweaks.
