Default HANS newbie has questions, needs advice for HPDEs

Hi guys,

I am transitioning from tracking my family sedan (Audi S4) to a 2016 GT4. I'm not racing, just doing about a dozen HPDE type events a year.

To help sell the wife on the upgrade, safety is a major factor.

So I'm installing a roll bar in the GT4 and finally getting myself into a harness and HANS. This is custom built locally. See pic below.

Here's what I think I need. Can you confirm or offer some options?

Harness - https://www.schrothracing.com/produc...harnesses#3468
(and 2x if I plan to cut the passenger seat cushion for install)

Submount assembly -

This - https://www.gmgracing.com/store/2016...rap-mount.html

Or this? https://cantrellmotorsport.com/produ...ub-belt-mount/

Which HANS is recommended for me? 6'1" 210lbs - http://simpsonraceproducts.com/shop-...straints/hans/

...and I'm in the market for a new helmet too.

Thanks in advance... here's a pic of the GT4 roll bar under construction in another customer's car. I really like the design, as it seems to have more visibility than others.

I'd suggest you go with a 5 point belt instead of the 4 point belt you posted and anchor the sub straps to the floor of your car. With respect to the HANS, you can go with the cheapest that fits your neck width. I would definitely try one on before you buy. Same with the helmet - try it on.

BTW - That looks more like a roll bar than a cage.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, a roll bar - I edited the original post. I'll check out the 5 point harnesses.

Cut the passenger side cushion? I don't understand. Don't cut stock seats to install harnesses, that's not gonna pass any tech. If you have a race seat on driver's side, you will need one on passenger side if you're ever going to have a passenger/instructor in the car.

My GT4 has the full bucket seats. The driver's side has a pass through for the sub mounts. The passenger side does not, unfortunately.

I called my dealer to ask about a driver's side seat cushion to be used for the passenger side. $2500 for a seat cushion?! lol.

Cut it? https://rennlist.com/forums/991-gt3-...l#post12030134

Interesting. Did not know that. Agree with 5 or even 6 point belts, those 4 point ones may not be legal for DE with some groups, including PCA I believe. Also, IMHO I would consider putting the sub mounts on the floor with some reinforcement on the other side so that everything is not based on the seat mount bolts, but others opinions may vary on that.

Ummm - 4 point belt should be illegal illegal because you can slide under and 5 point is bad for you *****.

5 Point bottom strap goes right over your jewels.. Look up testicular rupture and decide if you want the straps around your ***** or over them...

So a 6pt harness is the recommendation? Like this?

http://www.sparcousa.com/product/6pt-belt

Thanks again for the input guys.

Those are 3" belts. If you're going the hans route, i would get the Hans belts that are 3" and narrow down to 2" at the shoulders to fit the Hans better. You can use 3" also, but the 2" is easier. The other thing to look for is how the belts connect to your car. Snap in hooks versus bolts for the sub and bottom belts. The shoulder ones will wrap around the roll bar.

For the Porsche buckets you should look at the Schroth profi II GT3 6 pt harness. These have the sewn in eyelets on the lap belts to use the factory mounting points. Also allows you to use the 3 pt belts on the street.

See the GT4 subforum, Orthojoe's track build thread. He has some photos there.

As previously mentioned, 4pt belts are not all that great. 5pt are safer than 4 imho, but uncomfortable. If you are going with harnesses, go with 6pt.

PCA has never allowed modification of a seat to allow the use of harnesses, and that applies to the passenger seat in a GT4 also. To put a harness on the passenger seat you would need a new seat. Keep the stock seat belt on that side and use you driver side three point when you have an instructor in the car with you.

Not to confuse matters but PCA National has weighed in on this and they are highly against modifying the passenger seat. Before you modify your seat check in with your local PCA region.

National PCA has approved these belts: https://www.schrothracing.com/produc...fi-ii-asm#3468

Look for the belts specifically made for the Porsche Carbon Seat.

Thanks, that's the exact same link I started the thread with.
