Default COTA and engines

Thinking of doing COTA for the first time. Any engine pre-cautions that are necessary for the engine due to long straights and high G turns? Overfill with oil? Back off somewhat on straights? I could care less about times, just want to have fun. (I have read here and there that the track is hard on engines.)

Car=> 996 with not stock engine M96, Street tires, coil overs.
Me=> typically solo, advanced group.

It's hard on brakes and hard on 2nd gear downshifts. Other than that, drive and have fun. Who are you planning to attend with for the DE?

Overfill can actually aerate the oil and foam it up...could cause even more problems Run it at "full" mark on dipstick IMHO.

Like Surlyn said get your brakes in top shape, there are five turns greater than 90 degrees and two of them are at the end of the longest straights.....

They overfill the GT4 Clubsport....might not be an issue on the 9A1 motors I guess - but I would not mess around with it if it were my car.

Agree with everyone on the brakes - make sure they are in good condition, with FRESH fluid (unless you're on SRF). Unlike other tracks in Texas, you can hit stuff at COTA if your brakes don't work as you expect them. Have fun, COTA is a great track, lots of nuances that make it interesting to learn.

As had be said many times: Brakes. Track is actually easy on tires.

I'm a lot pickier about my brakes and fluid at COTA than I am at other times. Oil fill is the same I run at TWS and appropriate for tracking my car. COTA isn't anything special in this regard.

Oh, and what 2nd gear downshifts? COTA is a 3rd gear min track for me. The beauty of the S52 with a 3.46 rear end.

Lucky you....I have to use 2nd on T1, T11, T15, T20 - but I still don't lust after PDK

....lucky for you, I use 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 at COTA, close ratios makes for a lot of shifts....

If you are going to track your 996 often -- I would move to a deep sump kit with a baffle plate.

I went with 1/2 qt and and baffle plate -- EBS for one, Brey-Kraus for the other -- I don't remember which was which. It's a relatively easy DIY, especially on a lift.

That is what I have in my Boxster S.

Enjoy the event. As said, oil starvation can be real if you are running r comp tires and no baffles on the 996. It would happen in the carousel if anywhere.

If you go the garage route with 6 cars jammed in there, watch out for the bathroom door getting opened into your door. We tape off a spot on the floor to represent its swing, so nobody gets hit. 6 is tight unless you are in Miatas.

Have fun David...I'd love to run at COTA.

What engine mods have you done? Just curious as I occasionally track(DE) a stock 996?
