Anybody Been to Nurburgring???
Anybody been to Nurburgring? I will be in the area in late August (Spa F1) and was wondering if anybody has done one of the rental race car track programs? I don't want to spend $2500 to do 10 laps in a 991. I just want to drive around the thing in something fun.
Any personal experience from Rennlisters?

Three Wheelin'
I just reviewed Sixt's website, and didn't see any 'Ring exclusions, which might mean that they're still fair game. Six years ago, I rented a 318d from them, and ran 5 laps at the 'Ring with it during the Tourist sessions. It was a blast, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Realistically, no one will be able to utilize the capabilities of something like a 991 without a ton of laps at the 'Ring. With the 318d, I was able to keep my foot to the floor in a lot of the sections that you'd be coasting on in a faster car. If you're not too risk-averse, I'd say to give this a shot.

The last time I was there was in a turbo diesel mini bus on winter tires. Not recommended as a fast way round, but I had 5 people with me. We saw a lot of people in Suzuki Swifts from http://www.rent4ring.de/en/

My tea search pointed me to not use the regular rent a car vendors (europcar, Avis, sixt). Part of what I found was if you were caught running on the ring in their car you would be forever banned from renting from them- and since I depend on them for business that wasn't an option. I used a company near the ring rentracecar.de and rented a VW scrucci properly setup for track driving (rollbar, race seat, harnesses, proper brake pads, tires) for about 350 euro for the day. They had cars to fit every budget from Clio to Porsches. And insurance for driving the ring.
Treated me well, car was great. The ring is quite challenging- and there are plenty of gt3 pilots who clearly go there every week. Hardest part was staying out of their way. You can get a ride in the BMW ring taxi which I would highly recommend. Need to book a reservation on that weeks or months in advance however.

Cheapest is to rent a Suzuki or similar from RSR, Rent for Ring etc. there are several companies that rent these cars.
You don't need a lot of power to go fast, it is a momentum track. A well setup and well driven Swift will blow off doors of many faster cars with poor setup/tires/Driver.
I think a Swift costs 150-200/Day (you can have it for the entire day) and then pay some fee per lap.

But like I wrote in the previous post, you can have a lot of fun even with a low hp car there. It is mostly a momentum track and once you get it flowing you'll be passing a lot of cars with much more hp.
In that sense you get better bang for the buck in a cheaper lower hp car.

Kip W and I are driving right past the Ring on the way from the Porsche Museum to Spa. We'll have the wive's with us, so the stop at the Ring will be fairly short. I just booked 10 laps in the VW Scirocco Cup+. That should be plenty to experience the track. Kip and I will do 5 laps each.
My wife works for a German holding company. One of the managing partners is friends with a senior exec at Porsche HQ. He's going to arrange a private tour. Should be a fun trip.
